Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine. Each Wednesday you get to highlight a book that your really looking forward to. This is week I’ve chosen:
- Alice (Chronicles of Alice 1).
- The Red Queen (Chronicles of Alice 2).
Slightly breaking the rules but hey, rules are meant to be broken! 🙂 Nah, in all seriousness the books are released less than a month apart so I thought I may aswell include them together.
Book Blurb for Alice:
In a warren of crumbling buildings and desperate people called the Old City, there stands a hospital with cinderblock walls which echo with the screams of the poor souls inside. In the hospital, there is a woman. Her hair, once blonde, hangs in tangles down her back. She doesn’t remember why she’s in such a terrible place-just a tea party long ago, and long ears, and blood…Then, one night, a fire at the hospital gives the woman a chance to escape, tumbling out of the hole that imprisoned her, leaving her free to uncover the truth about what happened to her all those years ago.Only something else has escaped with her. Something dark. Something powerful. And to find the truth, she will have to track this beast to the very heart of the Old City, where the rabbit waits for his Alice.
Book Blurb for The Red Queen:
The land outside of the Old City was supposed to be green, lush, hopeful. But the verdant fields are nothing but ash and hope is nowhere to be found. Still, Alice and Hatcher are on a mission to find his daughter: a quest they will not forsake even as it takes them deep into the clutches of the mad White Queen or into the realm of the twisted and cruel Black King. The pieces are set and the game has begun, and each move brings Alice closer to her destiny.
The expected publication date is:
- Alice: 28th June 2016 UK.
- The Red Queen: 12th July 2016 UK.
While not my usual read, I think this duology sounds like a really dark and disturbing retelling of the classic and for some reason the synopsis reminded me of a PS3 game I played a few years ago called Alice: Madness Returns.
Oh my goodness – there must be something ‘out there’… because there is also Queen of Hearts by Colleen Oates, which is a dystopian take on Wonderland with a rather bratty princess, who is evidently going to become the Red Queen. I’ll be fascinated to see how you get on with this intriguing pair of books.

I’ve read Alice and LOVED it. But very dark and disturbing, and I mean DARK. I already have the e-galley for The Red Queen which I’ll be reading soon. Enjoy!

I fancy both of these – I’ve already seen Tammy’s review and it made me want to read it more – dark!!
Look forward to your reviews if you pick these up.

I’ll have to check out her review, the general consensus seems to be that the book is dark, not sure what that says about me as it makes me want to read it more! 😂

I read quite a few good reviews for Alice when it come out (US) last year! Dark and violent twist on the story – which I think is awesome.

The Alice games were freakin’ great!!! When I read Alice, I expected the same kind of vibe…well, it didn’t turn out that way really, but it was still very dark and awesome. Thanks for reminding me that the second book is coming out soon, I’ll need to read it too. Love those UK covers as well.

The PS3 game is awesome, the books nothing like the game which was what I thought it wouldbe but there both still great. The games very much a standard platformer with some puzzles but the art direction and imagery is amazing. 😊
