Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted on Books and a Beat.
Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
My Choice: The Cthulu Casebooks: Sherlock Holmes and the Shadwell Shadows by James Lovegrove.
Page 23:
“By Jove!” I exclaimed, as though I had only just entered the pub and noticed him. “It’s Stamford, isn’t it?”
Stamford twitched, then turned round and peered at me. “Do I know you, Sir?”
Page 85:
I heard voices lost in cavernous echoes, and glimpsed scaly skin, slit-like pupils, flickering forked tongues…
Page 123:
Then a hand was pressed to my mouth and I heard the voice of Sherlock Holmes, at a whisper, saying in my ear: “Watson. Not a word. Get up. Quiet as you can. We are not alone.”
Book Blurb:
It is the autumn of 1880, and Dr John Watson has just returned from Afghanistan. Badly injured and desperate to forget a nightmarish expedition that left him doubting his sanity, Watson is close to destitution when he meets the extraordinary Sherlock Holmes, who is investigating a series of deaths in the Shadwell district of London. Several bodies have been found, the victims appearing to have starved to death over the course of several weeks, and yet they were reported alive and well mere days before. Moreover, there are disturbing reports of creeping shadows that inspire dread in any who stray too close. Holmes deduces a connection between the deaths and a sinister drug lord who is seeking to expand his criminal empire. Yet both he and Watson are soon forced to accept that there are forces at work far more powerful than they could ever have imagined. Forces that can be summoned, if one is brave or mad enough to dare…

The cover didn’t do anything for me, but I love Sherlock Holmes and I am very curious. Great teasers.

Thanks, the cover seems very diversive, I really like it but quite a few others don’t.😀 It’s a decent read so far.

I like the cover! Reminds me of absinthe and opium dens. The good old days ;).

Ha, Sherlock uses opium anyway but alas the UK isn’t a drug haven and doesn’t have opium dens!😂

Exactly! Which is why I think the cover is fitting! 🙂 Oh, you’re just living in the wrong century for it :’)

I love the Sherlock Holmes stories and am a huge fan of James Lovegrove’s writing, so I am going to HAVE to track this one down – just as soon as I get control of my teetering TBR. Many thanks for sharing, Drew. This is my sci fi adventure – I think it’s right up your alley… https://sjhigbee.wordpress.com/2016/10/25/teaser-tuesday-25th-october-2016/

The cover isn’t as eye catching as some of the others you’ve shown.

Alas, I don’t pick the covers for the books I read and not all canbe eye catching.😀

I read all of these passages with my best British accent (not good at all) LOL! I’m curious now to see which one I have, I know that it’s a collector’s edition I have at home but it’s quite unreasonable to walk around with & read. Honestly, it’s more suitable as a weapon than a book…I shall tweet you a pic of it when I get home LOL. I should look for a smaller version of my brick to read 🙂

If it’s the complete collection of Sherlock Holmes there’s quite often free versions on the Kindle but for a print copy I bet it is a rather hefty tome.😂

Hhhmm, better not comment as to if I have a copy as people are funny about religion and I don’t want to offend anyone!😂

Have to say this cover isn’t very exciting. 🙂 How could anyone read a book with such an unappealing cover? LOL This is in response to your email earlier. 🙂 I like Sherlock, but I don’t think this is for me.

Each to their own, some seem to like the cover and some don’t but either way it’s definitely a better looking book in real than the picture shows.
The Sherlock book that I read with Hellraiser is better.

It doesn’t matter to me as far as cover. Some books have awesome covers and suck. Alice had an awful cover and was good. 🙂

True and hell yeah that US Alice cover is God awful, what were they thinking!😂
