Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
This weeks prompt is: Top Ten Books To Read If Your Book Club Likes _______________ (if your book club likes historical fiction, inspiring stories, YA books, non-fiction, controversial books to debate about, or pick a specific book).
This is my first time having a go at this meme and I’m choosing fantasy books, more specifically the first books in ten fantasy trilogies/series, here goes:
The Red Knight (The Traitor Son Cycle Book 1) by Miles Cameron.
Prince of Thorns (The Broken Empire Trilogy Book 1) by Mark Lawrence.
Gardens of the Moon (The Malazan Book of The Fallen Book 1) by Steven Erikson.
Among Thieves (The Tales of The Kin Book 1) by Douglas Hulick.
Malice (The Faithful and The Fallen Book 1) by John Gwynne.
Prince of Fools (The Red Queen’s War Book 1) by Mark Lawrence.
The Blade Itself (The First law Trilogy Book 1) by Joe Abercrombie.
The Painted Man/The Warded Man (The Demon Cycle Saga Book 1) by Peter V. Brett.
Assassin’s Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy Book 1) by Robin Hobb.
The Name of The Wind (The KingKiller Chronicles Book 1) by Patrick Rothfuss.
Follow me on:
Twitter and Goodreads.
I need to read so many of these, but I really liked Prince of Thorns and Among Thieves. I’ve never seen that cover for Among Thieves before. 🙂

It’s the UK cover for Among Thieves.😀

The American cover is not super great. I approve of using the UK cover!

I have heard The Name of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss is so good but I am very scared of it. It is so big than I am used to and will I remember everything that went down in the book?

I don’t think size matters in fantasy if you’re enjoying the book and story being told. It’s definitely worth a read though.😀

I hope to pick this one up next year! 🙂

Well I hope you enjoy it when you get around to reading it. 😀

Thank you! 🙂 You aren’t the only one that made me want to read the book. Regan at PeruseProject (on YouTube) raved about the book. She loved it! So, I am very excited! 🙂

I think it’s a book most people like, I don’t actually remember reading a bad review for it.😀

Me either! 🙂

Well I know if you are recommending it, I need to add it. You are going to be the death of my GR tbr haha.

I thoroughly approve of your list:). I’ve read 6 of them and have ‘Gardens of the Moon’ and ‘Malice’ on my TBR list…
LikeLiked by 1 person
Ah, 6 out of 10 is good. Malice is amazing!😀 Gardens of the Moon is good but it’s quite hard to get into and isn’t the best book in the series.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yes, I gather ‘Gardens of the Moon’ isn’t the easiest read – but Himself reckons it’s worth it because the series is remarkable.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Oh it’s definitely worth it, the second and third books are my favourite in the entire series, so it’s definitely worth getting through gardens of the moon.😀

Thank you for the advice, Drew.

Prince of Thorns is awesome! 🙌 Jorgy ❤️ I read about 25% of Prince of Fools. I still need to finish King of Thorns before I can move on to the other series. 2 memes in one day after my meme complaints. Lol 😂
LikeLiked by 1 person
Little Jorgy rules! King is the best book in the trilogy.😀 Yeah, 2 in one day, just like loads of other bloggers out there Jill so don’t just pigeon hole me when others do it to.😢
LikeLiked by 1 person
Jorgy is def awesome! 🙂 I don’t know why anyone would want to post two memes in one day but that’s just me. One is more than enough. 😂 Memes are not my fave, as you know. I’m not knocking you, just adding to what you wrote. 🙂

Are these YA fantasy or Adult fantasy, I like to read my outside my genre every now and again so going on my love for Nevernight, what would you specifically recommend?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Hhmm, I don’t read Y-A! So all adult fantasy!😂 That’s a tough one as Nevernight was supposed to be classed as Y-A by some yet it had loads of blood and gore in it and the graphic sex scenes are the worst I’ve ever read in any fantasy.
Assassins Apprentice is a quintessential fantasy book and I’d recommend and also Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence from the list. Also, not on the list is Blood Song by Anthony Ryan, it has a young main character who learns in the book vaguely similar to Mia in Nevernight.

I went on Kristoffs website to clear up the “is Nevernight YA?” debate and in his FAQ, he states Nevernight is MA (or NA if you prefer) so that probably explains why we liked it so much lol. Thanks for the recs, I’ll check them out. I don’t read much fantasy at all but I really enjoyed Nevernight so I’d like to try a few more 🙂

Glad to hear it’s not Y-A, I had a hard time believing that it was when I read it and I’m fairly sure I wrote an entire paragraph on why it’s not Y-A in my review!😂
LikeLiked by 2 people
It’s just because he’s written YA before, and all the YA Fans were on the Kristoff bandwagon. I think this was an internet fan assumption rather than the truth. I’m glad someone looked it up for real! 🙂
LikeLiked by 1 person
Only need to read the book to see it’s not Y-A, I’m a fantasy fan and like grimdark and Nevernight had far worse things in it than most books in that genre, even making GRRM seem tame in comparison.😂

So many favourites here! Robin Hobb is such a great recommendation, and Steven Erikson is definitely worth picking up. I’m adding the others to my TBR pile 🙂

Red Sister, I shall wait and tempt my luck with a real paper arc nearer the release.😀
I believe Jill has requested it though.😀

Ah, you can get the actual paper ones of course :D. I’ll just have to try my luck digitally!

Well….I got a finished hardback copy of The Wheel of Osheim by him to review from Harper Collins about a month after I started blogging, so I’d like to think that I may be lucky enough to be considered for a paper one nearer the time.😀

I’m going to have to add some of these to my list of fantasy books to read when I’m not feeling my normal contemporary reads. I also wanted to mention that I love the layout of this post and how you did the books. Looks super nice.
My TTT.

Great list! I haven’t read any of these, though I own a few and have had my eye on a few of the others! I’ll definitely keep those books in mind in the future, when seeking a new fantasy to dive into! (I don’t, admittedly, read fantasy often–I have to be in just the right mood for it, I guess).
Happy book-ing to you in the future! My TTT is right here, if you want to check it out–but no worries if you don’t! ❤

Thanks, I’m a fantasy fan – obviously. 😀 But agree that if you don’t read it often then you need to be in the right mood – especially with the length of some of the books!😂
LikeLiked by 1 person
Hahaha I’ve always been more a “mood” reader in regards to fantasy. Every other genre, I can pick up and read just fine without the mood playing a part in it, but fantasy for some reason is more difficult for me. *shrugs*

Never heard of Among Thieves, but I’m adding it to my list!! I love the graphics for these, did you do them yourself? If so, what program did you use and did it take a long time?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Among Thieves is great, the short synopsis doesn’t do it justice but it’s really good.
Thank you and yes, I did the graphics myself. I used pic monkey, just the free version, there’s a paid for version with more features etc. I think most people use Canva but I don’t know what it’s like and have never checked it out but I like pic monkey, it’s simple to use and navigate. No, it didn’t take long, longer than just adding the cover and/or blurb for each book to the post would have but, I had to create the TTT logo to and I knew what style I wanted for the graphics, it took 30 – 40 minutes – which I didn’t think was bad at all and I was pleased with the result.

Agree with you about name of the wind 😊 gardens of the moon and assassin’s apprentice are both on my Kindle and waiting to be read! So many others to explore!

Assassin’s Apprentice is awesome!😀 Gardens of the Moon is good but it’s definitely not the best Malazan book.

I officially cannot call myself a fantasy fan any longer. Holy crap. I haven’t read A SINGLE BOOK ON THIS LIST. I am ashamed. Horribly, horribly ashamed!!! I have the Hobb sitting on my bookshelf at home, but I haven’t been in a series mood lately. It looks like I’ve got to get cracking not only on that book, but on all the others.
So much for reading one book at a time…
