Romeo and/or Juliet is a “choose your own” adventure style of book by Ryan North. For those of you unaware what a “choose your own adventure” book is then please see the below graphic/or if you already know then skip to below the graphic.
OK, so now we all know what a “choose your own” adventure book is, it’s a book dear reader where you are in charge!
North has taken William Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet and turned it into his own unique version aptly titled Romeo and/or Juliet as you get to choose which of the two classic characters you read as.
Now, how to describe a book like this that has countless possibilities as far as storylines go!
If like me you studied Shakespeare in school and it was many moons ago and you need a quick recap of the story in Romeo and Juliet then see below:
But, if you know the story and are interested in the story in Romeo and/or Juliet then please see below the first below!
And, yes for those eagle-eyed amongst you reading this, that is most definitely a robot in the bottom corner and now you may well be asking what?? Why is there a robot in the graphic?? And I will tell you it is simply to emphasise the point that anything can happen in this book, there are so many fun possibilities and outcomes that it truly is great fun!
North’s writing is really good, he has an easy writing style and you end up chuckling along without even realising it. He pulls you into the stories being told thanks to his great execution in giving you just enough of everything without it ever feeling too much or too little. Each section is on a whole well thought though you do get some very short parts just of a line or two that move the story forward depending on the choices made.
North has a real knack for making you constantly smile and his winking asides are often irreverent and always humourous breaking the fourth wall and including you the reader in the story.
There’s so many different possibilities here that I haven’t read the entire book or all the paths and different endings, that’s deceiving the object of a “choose your own” adventure book anyway but I have read a lot and gone through lots of the various choices and spent an incredible few hours reading this book.
As well as Romeo and Juliet there’s also a couple of other characters that you can find depending on your choices, side quests and also a couple of other stories inside the story.
A massive mention has to go to the artists who illustrated this book, I am a big fan of the red and black colour scheme and it is used to perfection throughout this book. Each ending has an illustration by one of the different artists and you get a variety of art styles used.
All are top quality and a treat to see adding so much to the already awesome book.
Who would I recommend it to?? Well, everyone!! It’s a book that anyone who wants a laugh should read, it has a plethora of choices to make resulting in boundless possibilities and as a result it really will brighten up your day and make you smile!
Highly recommended.

This book sounds amazing, and I need it on my shelf. (The fact that it’s a collaboration with Kate Beaton and Noelle Stevenson, two of my favorite comic artists, doesn’t hurt.) Thanks for pointing it out! =D

Ha, I know American’s are over dramatic but I’m disappointed!😢 You wrote ‘you Brits’ and after reading Jill’s post earlier I’d have expected a ‘y’all Brits’ comment!😂

Oh, we are too, there’s no doubt about that! But after spending so many years earning a degree in political science, very little surprises me anymore. I’m a cynic through and through… hahahaha next time I’ll be sure to sneak it in there you you! 😂

Brilliant.. I love that I’m starting to see all these new and really unique and original ways books can be written these days… these kind of experiments really pay off for the modern reader and I am certainly keeping my eyes peeled for this one.
Also- awesome graphics with great content! 😀

Thanks.😀 It is a fun book but was hard for me to review so I tried something a bit different with the graphics as it’s fun it seemed wrong to just write a normal review.
True, there’s lots of unique and wonderfully weird books out there.😀

It’s been years since the last time I read a choose-your-own-adventure book! I love the idea behind this one, and as I studied Shakespeare in high school and in university, I’m curious about the new … perspectives :p this one offers!

LOVE the way you set up this review!! 😀 Sure brightened up my Sunday morning! (or afternoon, whatever, I’m an adult and get out of bed whenever I want to!)
I have NEVER read a choose your own adventure book. I have one on my Kindle but since it’s about broccoli warriors, I haven’t been tempted to read it yet…This one, oh man, this sounds so awesome! And Noelle Stevenson was one of the artists for this? Count me in!! *sigh* I’m broke ever since I sent out some waffles to a couple of blogger friends in the US, though, not knowing it would be 25 euros on shipping costs per package of waffles…I think I’m going to open up a PayPal account to solemnly donate to my book needs on my blog. “Help Anne make it through winter.” With this Romeo and/or Juliet preferably! ^^
P.s.- I just realised the author’s name sounded familiar and then realised he’s behind the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl comics. LE. SIGH.

Ha, I think I read a choose your own adventure book in school but not since.
Broccoli warriors?!?!?!?!!? WTF!!! 🙂
LOL at paypal account!

And you have succeeded! 😀 https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22852141-eaten I’m not entirely sure this is a choose your own adventure one, though. I thought he only wrote those, but seems like this is not the case. Either way…:’)

Romeo and Juliet is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays. This sounds like so much fun! 🙂 What if Romeo and Benvolio went to breakfast? Lol Mercutio is my favorite though, apart from Romeo. What if Romeo never went to the ball with Mercutio? Now, that’s the story I’d want to read. Would he meet Juliet somewhere else instead? As a huge fan of the play, I think I need to read this book. Awesome review! I definitely want to read this now. What publisher did you get this from? I think I need to ask them for a copy.

Thanks, glad the review has your seal of approval as I tried something a bit different with it. 🙂
I got it from Orbit but it was released in the UK last week and has been out in America for over a year so I’m not sure if you’d get a copy to review or not. 🙂

The Orbit publicist just sent me a few hardbacks this week. I think I’ll ask her and see what she says. I’m curious what path I would choose with this book.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Good luck with that, maybe check on Goodreads who the US publisher is though as lots of books seem to have different UK publishers – for some reason. 🙂
LikeLiked by 1 person
You’re right. It’s a different publisher, which is so weird because Orbit here is part of Hatchette, but this book was published by Riverhead, an imprint of Penguin so that’s two completely different companies. That literally makes no sense at all. Why wouldn’t the same parent company publish it worldwide? I know they do that a lot, but it makes no sense, seeing as they would have to share rights with another company. Weird.

It is weird, same in the UK though, Tor in the UK is part of a different company to Tor in the US and publish different authors, weird! 🙂

I’m so glad I read your review, Drew. I never would have picked this book up otherwise! I didn’t enjoy reading CYOA’s as a child because I always managed to get killed within the first 5-10 pages. But this sounds really interesting.
Anything about some of the unique twists you can share without spoiling anything? I’m curious to understand how this varies from the original.
LikeLiked by 2 people
That’s the thing though, if you get killed in the first 5 – 10 pages then you just have another go and another and another!😂
Hhhmm, spoiling it, in some they live, in some they die, in some they don’t meet, in some they meet other people, giant robots, ninjas, there’s so many variables and endings!😀
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yeah, but I got disheartened at home many times I had to go back and start over again. It became exhausting!
At least with this book, you know that death isn’t a failure. I must certainly read it now if only for giant robots and ninjas.
…I wonder how good ol’ Billy Shakes would feel about this book?

Who knows with Shakespeare, hopefully he’d at least have a chuckle at the book.😂
LikeLiked by 1 person
Certainly he would! And I would hope that it inspires him to include more giant robots in future plays. 😜

I’d prefer Ninja’s! Unless the giant robots transformed and then that’d be epic!😀

Sigh, forgetting robots in disguise, that damn cartoon film will always hold a special place for me, it’s one of those films you can watch that takes you back to childhood and is escapism for a couple of hours – yeah, I’m a mature adult!😂

Pft, I feel that way about the Little Nemo Adventures in Slumberland animated film. Completely childish escapism.

It’s down to different publishers in the countries I believe, it’s surprising how many books have different UK and US publishers, it’s a really fun read though and I’m glad it made it’s way to the UK.
