Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine. Each Wednesday you get to highlight a book that your really looking forward to. This week I’ve chosen:
Red Sister (Book of the Ancestor 1) by Mark Lawrence.
I was born for killing – the gods made me to ruin.
At the Convent of Sweet Mercy young girls are raised to be killers. In a few the old bloods show, gifting talents rarely seen since the tribes beached their ships on Abeth. Sweet Mercy hones its novices’ skills to deadly effect: it takes ten years to educate a Red Sister in the ways of blade and fist.
But even the mistresses of sword and shadow don’t truly understand what they have purchased when Nona Grey is brought to their halls as a bloodstained child of eight, falsely accused of murder: guilty of worse.
Stolen from the shadow of the noose, Nona is sought by powerful enemies, and for good reason. Despite the security and isolation of the convent her secret and violent past will find her out. Beneath a dying sun that shines upon a crumbling empire, Nona Grey must come to terms with her demons and learn to become a deadly assassin if she is to survive…
The expected publication date is: April 4th 2017 (US) and April 6th 2017 (UK).
Now, that is the US cover and I have to admit it’s really stunning, screaming look at and buy me but I have to be patriotic and have to write, here’s hoping that as a UK resident that when it’s released to, the UK cover is just as good! 🙂
Mark Lawrence is one of my favourite authors and his books are a must read for me, if you’re a fantasy fan then they should be for you to as you won’t be dissapointed! He has gotten better with each book and he started of great with Prince of Thorns but for me so far the pinnacle of his writing has been set with this years release and the final book in The Red Queen’s War trilogy The Wheel of Osheim, a stunning conclusion to an epic trilogy. Can Red Sister top that?? Who knows but it’s sure to be a great read and from the early reviews I’ve read there’s a damn good chance that it will be Lawrence’s best book yet!

Loved that synopsis!! I dare ask, for a beginner with Mark Lawrence, which series would you recommend me starting?

Have to start at the beginning with Prince of Thorns (Broken Empire book 1) – even Jill liked it.😂 But saying that, if you still haven’t read any Lawrence by the time this is released, it’s a new setting and characters so there’d be no reason not to start with this.😀

I love fantasy but thats usually YA…so I’m trying to read Adult Fantasy lol. Thanks though!! I think I have time before April to read Prince of Thorns =)

Ah, it isn’t a long book, not like Game of Thrones or that crazy length.😂
Lol, have you read Nevernight? I know that was classed by some as Y-A but, I read it and it was far worse than lots of adult fantasy.

Lol!!! I don’t know why I just don’t pick up Adult Fantasy, like I’m 3 yrs from 30 here haha! Yes I read Nevernight and it’s one of my faves for 2016!!! I cannot wait for the second book. How did you like that one?

I really liked Nevernight, I didn’t understand how some classed it as Y-A though due to the blood and violence – worse than Mark Lawrence and the sex scenes to were far worse than adult fantasy to, the footnotes were annoying but it was a good read.
Oh my, you’re a youngling then, some of us are well over 30!😂

I guess the characters age?? And some books that are considered YA are gruesome and detailed in the sex department compared to a few years ago. So I can see how some would get confused.
Lol!!! Youngling? Ha ha! 😂

I like grimdark though and it’s grim and dark not just adult fantasy but the gory and blood soaked version and Nevernight was worse than that in places, it was a good read though and I’m not sure about the characters age, I read a lot of adult fantasy and one of the main tropes is starting of with a young character, I’ve read it in so many books and then as the trilogy/series progresses so does the characters age. Damn, I sound like a know it all, apologies.

That cover IS stunning.
Why do you guys in the UK always have to have a diff release date then us? Wtf? Lame! 😑

Ha, true, I think it’s because books are released in the US on a Tuesday and on a Thursday in the UK, at least it’s the same week for this book though not months between the release dates.😂

True. I didn’t know that about book releases being on a certain day of the week…I knew movies came out on a certain day of the week out here (Thurs I believe) but didn’t know that about books! Huh. I learned something new!!
::files interesting fact away in brain where it will be quickly forgotten because memory dept is shot to hell::

Ha, it’s even more confusing in the UK as books generally come out on a Thursday but on occasion they are released on a Tuesday to and then video games are released on a Friday but also on occasion on a Tuesday to, it’s confusion!😂
