Welcome to the very first edition of 200 Words or Less, a new weekly feature that will run on Fridays on The Tattooed Book Geek where I will bring to you reviews/thoughts of 200 words or less from the books I read before I started blogging. We all have them, books that we read and loved or even read and hated before we decided to start blogging and what better way than a quick fire review of 200 words or under to share your thoughts on them.
My Choice:
Faith shapes the landscape, defines the laws of physics, and makes a mockery of truth. Common knowledge isn’t an axiom, it’s a force of nature. What the masses believe is. But insanity is a weapon, conviction a shield. Delusions give birth to foul new gods.
Violent and dark, the world is filled with the Geisteskranken—men and women whose delusions manifest, twisting reality. High Priest Konig seeks to create order from chaos. He defines the beliefs of his followers, leading their faith to one end: a young boy, Morgen, must Ascend to become a god. A god they can control.
But there are many who would see this would-be-god in their thrall, including the High Priest’s own Doppels, and a Slaver no one can resist. Three reprobates—The Greatest Swordsman in the World, a murderous Kleptic, and possibly the only sane man left—have their own nefarious plans for the young god.
As these forces converge on the boy, there’s one more obstacle: time is running out. When one’s delusions become more powerful, they become harder to control. The fate of the Geisteskranken is to inevitably find oneself in the Afterdeath.
The question, then, is: Who will rule there?
Beyond Redemption (Manifest Delusions #1) by Michael R. Fletcher.
Beyond Redemption welcomes us to the world of Manifest Delusions and the Geisteskranken. Where your delusions shape your reality and change the world. The more deluded you are, the more powerful you become, can you say, the inmates are running the asylum!
Bedeckt, Witchtig and Stehlen are a grizzled, self-centred and hideous trio of tortured yet enthralling main characters and yes, they are pure awesome.
The only very minor downside to the book is the usage of the German language to name the Geisteskranken, at times whilst reading I found it’s hard to pronounce the names but the harsh and sharp sounding words fit well with the overall very dark and very grim tone of the book.
A unique idea with delusions shaping reality, top writing, dark humour, great world building, visceral action, a veritable cornucopia of weird and wonderful batshit crazy fruit loop – (one of my favourite phrases, I feel lucky to have finally managed to use on my blog) Geisteskranken and finally a trio of captivating degenerates all makes Beyond Redemption a top quality, purely grimdark read.
Quotes from Beyond Redemption:
“Listen carefully. If communication is manipulation, sex is all-out war.”
“I was sane once. It was horrible.”
“A sane man is simply a man afraid to unleash his inner demons.”
“Always best to start with violence and attempt communication second. People reacted more favorably when they knew you would snuff a few lives to get what you wanted… or for no reason whatsoever.”
“For all Wichtig spoke of trust, he trusted no one. For all he spoke of wisdom, he learned nothing. Every word he uttered was done so with an eye toward manipulation.”
So, what are your thoughts? Do you think this is a good idea? Terrible? Would you like to see more 200 Words or Less posts?? If any of you wish to participate, 200 Words or Less will run each Friday (hopefully) on my blog then please do! And, please feel free to use the created graphic or create your own and make sure to link back to my blog and give Drew @ The Tattooed Book Geek credit as blog promotion for my little blog is always appreciated and 200 Words or Less is my evil creation that I have unleashed! 🙂

Yes, great idea! For people in a hurry who don’t have time to read a long review:-)

thank you and alas, there are lots of people who write short reviews under this length for every book they review but for older books it seemed about the right length, doubt I’d be able to remember much more than 200 words as I read some books years ago. 🙂

Absolute win with this idea! Brilliant, love it, want more 🙂
I don’t think I’ll be able to review the past books… I feel like I can’t remember enough about them.. damn, my memory is actually crap…but I’ll happily follow this feature! 🙂 Bring it on Drew… Bring. It. On! 😀

Thank you, glad you approve and that it’s been well received.😀 Ha, my memory isn’t too bad for stuff like books and games, etc from a few years ago but I’ll be damned if I can remember important stuff!😂 I doubt all of mine will be reviews though and some will be more like thoughts and musings.😀

Yes! it’s always the important stuff that gets erased from brains, especially the male variety of brains! 😛 😀

Oooohhhhh, burn for all the males out there, for shame Liz, for shame! 🙂

hahaha, you know I’m just messing.. there ain’t no feminist in me… men for the win! 😀 (darn, now I’m gonna start hearing it from the ladies!) 😀

Ha, it’s all good and ladies?!?!?!? Where!!!! 🙂 ha, it’s true anyway, with some of the sh#t that I can remember I often ask myself why I can’t remember important stuff! 🙂

That’s called selective memory 😀 hahaha… the important stuff is not the fun stuff most of the time, usually… but you’re still alive so not remembering the important stuff isn’t that life threatening.. you can always wing it! 😉

Drew, you are BRILLIANT. This is a great new post series. I constantly think about rereading old favorites just so I can write reviews for them with the books fresh in my mind. But this allows you to reflect fondly without re-reading, and it won’t take much time for you or your readers. LOVE IT.
I can’t wait to read more. Help me find my next favorite fantast novel. 🙂

Thank you, really appreciate it.😀 Worrying debuting a new feature as you don’t know how it’ll be received but it’s been a win so far. Ha at favourite fantasy novel as most of the books featured will be fantasy.😀

Love the idea , I may even participate some day If some day I can figure out how to shorten my thoughts about a book to less than 200 words .
On the book , I think I may pick it up just to check how much of my German knowledge helps me with it 🙂

Feel free to participate whenever you want, it’s cool.😀 I’d definitely recommend the book, it’s really good and the sequel The Mirror’s Truth (I’ve read it but haven’t reviewed it yet) is even better.😀

I am all for this! I knew you were sitting on something I would appreciate 🙂 I was just contemplating a bit ago on how to talk about older titles from my list. Clever you 😉 I may have to jump on this one very soon!

This is a great idea and one that I’d like to work into my weekly schedule! I’ve got TONS of books that I read prior to beginning my blog that I never really feature (so sad). *REVIEWS ALL THE BOOKS*

Thank you, glad it’s been well received and if you want to work it into your weekly schedule then go for it.😀

I’ll have to write up a few reviews in advanced, but it’s getting penciled in my schedule 😀

Ha, that’s what I’ve been doing, writing up drafts for the post so they’re done and hopefully I’ll remember to post them on the right day.😂

If I didn’t write up stuff in preparation, I would literally ALWAYS be behind and acting like a crazy person!

Great idea for Fridays :). How hard is it for you though, I know you enjoy writing long reviews, even longer than mine 😮

Thank you.😀
Quite tricky I guess, I’ve drafted a few posts up and some were easier than others to keep under the 200 Words limit but others I’d found I’d waffled on with and gone over without really writing anything!😂
Ha, that is true, I do have an ability to babble on with my reviews, guess this short review feature makes a nice counterpoint to my usual babbling though.😂
