First of all, this is the rather girly, pink and flowery feminine type logo that comes with the award, it’s cool for all you ladies out there but it’s making me shudder at its girlishness! So, I give to you the manly wolf logo for my blog. Wolves are cool!
I’m quite lapse at blogger tags and awards and don’t always do them but I thought I’d give this one a go. I would like to thank the five fine bloggers who nominated me, Susan at Books From Dusk Till Dawn, Sonja at A Lover of Books, Emma at Emma’s Bookish Corner, Jessica at Jessica’s Reading Room and Nat at The Owl on the Bookshelf.
Rules of the Award:
1. Thank the blogger who nominated you and provide a link to their blog.
2. Write a post to show your award.
3. Give a brief story of how your blog started.
4. Give two pieces of advice to new bloggers.
5. Select 15 other bloggers you want to give this award to.
6. Comment on each blog and let them know you have nominated them and provide a link to the post you created.
How My Blog Started:
Well……hhmm……the story behind this blog, now…..OK, right, I’ve got it! Now let me regale you with the tale!
One day I was sitting on the porcelain throne, thinking, musing and contemplating life (as you do, it’s where all the great minds think and where Tywin Lannister died, talk about heritage). When I decided to turn my mind and my attention to world domination, you see, I like to think I’m ‘evil’ and ‘bad’ and truth be told I could easily picture myself as a malevolent tyrant ruling over the masses. The only question was how to go about achieving my dastardly goal.
Most of the ideas I could come up with had already been done, tried, tested and failed I might add by lacklustre nitwits and then it struck me, an idea so original and diabolical in its concept that it was bound to succeed!
This idea you ask, well, to create a book blog of course! What better way to take over the masses than with subliminal messages implanted within poetry and book reviews, key words and phrases repeated that would over time give me control and make you all read fantasy. Come on, we’re all friends here and you can admit that fantasy truly is the greatest genre of them all!
Now, with my evil plan finally coming to fruition, muahaha! As your tyrant ruler I give to you the key phrase that once read will open your minds to me and I demand that you all go out, buy a fantasy book and then send me £10! The phrase is: I am Da Fox, pimped in white, ready to fight, dream to be on Kyle, I ooze that chavvy style, I am Da Fox! (Kyle refers to Jeremy Kyle, a chavvy morning TV show in the UK, trust me, there’s a whole other story behind that phrase and Da Fox that is so unbelievable it must be true).
Nah, storytelling aside how I came up with the blog isn’t very exciting at all and probably makes me out to be rather sad, get out the world’s smallest violin and label me weirdo. Until the beginning of 2016 having a book blog wasn’t something that I’d ever really considered, I wouldn’t say that I’d scoff and deride the idea more that, I’d never thought about it.
I had won a couple of Goodreads Giveaways in December 2015, reviewed the books (I like to think I’ve got slightly better at reviewing since then) and I was lucky enough to get a book from Twitter to and at the back of my mind I started to consider that a book blog might be an idea, it would allow me to offer my thoughts on books and also allow me to be part of a community of book lovers (not knowing many readers myself).
But there was a lot of unanswered questions, I’m not the most confident person at times and I needed to think it through, would I suck at blogging? Would I enjoy it? Would I stick with it? Would anyone bother to follow my blog? Would people think my reviews were terrible? Lots of questions that I didn’t know the answer to and I wasn’t sure that I wanted to take the leap from book lover to book blogger.
Anyway, I went on just being a book lover and reading my books. Then sadly, my dog, Sully took ill (she’d be laying on the sofa next to me while I was reading most of the time) and things didn’t go well, after a couple of weeks it was found that she had terminal cancer, no hope and needed to be put down. She went to sleep for the last time on February 19th 2016.
It hit me hard, I’m not going to lie, act tough and macho and say it didn’t matter, it did and it fucking killed. I needed something to take my mind of things, the loss, unhappiness, dark thoughts and perhaps even boredom. Melodramatic maybe, but pets are more than animals and are part of the family, they give love unconditionally and are always there for you. Any animal lover will agree, a pet deserves to be mourned, to be remembered.
So, the idea of blogging resurfaced and I created a blog on blogspot, it only lasted a couple of days, I hated the interface, my heart wasn’t in it and I didn’t enjoy it. Suffice to say, it got deleted and cast into the vast cavernous abyss of failed blogs.
I decided to give it another go on a different blogging format and tried WordPress. To cut a long story short, on the 5th March 2016 The Tattooed Book Geek was born and it has somehow survived up until this very day!
Offering my sage like elderly wisdom to the younglings / Two Pieces of Advice to New Bloggers:
1). Just Be Yourself! We all have different personalities, likes and dislikes and at the end of the day your blog should be an extension of who you are. I have tattoos and so I incorporated the fact I have them into my blogs name hence, The Tattooed Book Geek, it speaks of who I am rather than naming your blog Generic Book Blog. But I also try to add my own personality into my blog, I include jokes (often bad ones), the occasional popular culture reference into my posts and sarcasm, the gift of the gods I might add! I’m often sarcastic in my rare but oh so awesome discussion posts. I also dabble in poetry, I know, apologies to anyone who follows my blog that you have to put up with my simplistic rhyming poems but again, it’s part of who I am.
There are lots of blogs out there, countless amounts and while we don’t all read the same books and like the same genre……..But we are all book lovers together and a lot of the time we follow blogs for the bloggers personality so let yours shine through, make your blog part of who you are. 🙂
2). Enjoy It! Reading is a hobby and blogging is to, we all started our blogs because of our love of books but it’s sometimes easy to forget that. People don’t realise that blogging takes time and isn’t always easy, you have your own blog to create and then manage, posts to draft and prepare, graphics to make and other blogs to like and comment on and it all adds up, takes time, add in your reading to and you can occasionally lose the enjoyment of it all when you get snowed under and bogged down with posts to read, books to read and reviews to write.
If you feel the enjoyment waning and it seems like blogging is becoming a chore then take a step back, there’s no shame, take a break and chill, it’s only a hobby. We all blog differently and while some people will post each day, more than once a day even, others only post once or twice a week, same for the selection of posts you choose to do, there’s nothing wrong with memes but we do like to see reviews to (it’s where the bloggers personality shines through) and the various other plethora of varying post types that are out there.
There are no set rules to blogging, no guidelines of do’s and don’ts for you to follow and abide by, simply post what you want, when you want and enjoy it, blogging is a hobby, have fun and do whatever makes you happy! 🙂
Bloggers to Nominate:
After the recent book blogger bashing that has been going on, you can find my post where I represented and stood up for us all here:
I’m not going to nominate anyone individually as to me you all deserve recognition, we are all real readers and for having a blog we all deserve some recognition. So take a bow my good people and consider yourselves nominated, I stood up for us all and now it is time for you all to be counted, have at it, stand up and represent!!!!
Follow The Tattooed Book Geek on:
I love this article, Drew. I think it sort of sums up why a lot of us get involved in the world of book blogging:).

Nah, it was my mistake, I don’t often do tags or awards but should perhaps write down who and what I’ve been nominated for to save on errors in the post.

Fantastic post Drew , Pets are awesome indeed and their loss can be hard to get over

Man that logo! I wish you had already done this when I had done my post I would so have stolen it (with acknowledgment of course 😉)! I hate pink flowery things! It pained me putting the original on my site! 😂😂

Ha, I know! it pained me to put the pink flowery thing on my post to, thought I’d better include it but had to create my own, yuck, pink and flowery! 🙂

Fantastic post! I must admit when I nominated you I thought ‘that picture is waaay to girly’ the wolf version is brilliant 👏👏 and I couldn’t agree more on your thoughts on pets. They aren’t just animals they are family members

Thank you and yes, it is so true about pets, glad you agree. 🙂
Ha, true, I’m not into flowery and pink though I did include it as I presume it’s the original award logo but had to create a more ‘manly’ one to! 🙂

It is certainly girly and as I am a boy, it sure wasn’t for me, first thought was now that logo has to go!!! 🙂 Had to include it in the post though as it’s probably the original but I needed a better one for me to! 🙂

Great post :). I’m glad you stuck at the wordpress platform (blogspot never appealed to me either though Ii’ve never tried it lol) your blog has really grown and I’m glad it gave you something to focus on after your dog’s passing. I still hate saying that my cat died, I prefer to say she passed, it’s too final and horrible to focus on. It gets easer but I can fully understand how horrible it was, I was a mess for a long time after she died – pets are just like a human family member I agree. Lol, I did think that award tag was a bit too girly for you 😀 :p!!!

Thank you, yep pets are definitely just like humans. Ha, a bit too girly, try far too girly, pink and flowery!😂
Yes, surprisingly my blog has grown quite well, not sure how or even why but it has!😀

You are seriously adorable!! I loved everything about this tag!! well except the pet part that was rather sad… I understand your pain quite well. Hear! Hear! to being yourself… and ahem.. fantasy is quite good, but ahem.. there are other genre’s out there that are really good. #romance just saying…

Adorable?! Adorable?! Oh hell no!!! Not on my blog Missy!😂
Romance, there’s occasional romance in fantasy! If you’re reading The Name of the Wind you’ll know that Kvothe wants to get his rocks off with Denna and in the Greatcoats Brasti is always on the look out for women, romance!😂😉

Yes you are!!! Drew the adorable tattooed book geek 😂😂😂😂yup that’s your new name… first of all spoilers… kvothe is still a kid I am reading that book so damn slow. 2 Brasti doesn’t do romance, he wines them dines them *ahems* them and leaves them… that’s not romance. Lol 😂😂

Damn it, sorry about the spoilers.😞
Ha, Brasti, wines, dines, ????s and then leaves, that is the best type of romance!😂

It’s okay about the spoilers, it happens all the time 😉 What Brasti does… is… not… romance! lol

Haha probably! 😂 I had a wolfdog who liked eating flowers…does that count?

Well, if the wolfdog ate them, obviously they’d come out of the end that goes toilet, so I guess it counts and is the circle of flowers!😂

I very much enjoy your writing, you’re very witty, and very captivating. I also enjoyed reading this post because I agree with everything you said. I think people who aren’t in it for fun, don’t understand the point of blogging, to me blogging shouldn’t feel like work, otherwise, why do it?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Thank you, I’ll definitely take I’m witty and captivating, awesome!😀
That’s true, if you don’t do it for fun then there isn’t really any point in it, at times it might feel like work or a chore, unfortunately everything does, for blogging it might be down to wordpress messing up the formatting or struggling to write a review that causes it but overall it should be fun.😀

You’re welcome! 🙂
Ugh the formatting on WordPress can be so finicky, like the post I just uploaded can be a nightmare. Things shift and it becomes frustrating, but I try not to let that get to me.
But agree, once I feel the blog starting to become a chore that’s when I know to step back, otherwise I wouldn’t continue.

I’m sorry about your dog (sort of late for saying that but yeah) I have 4 dogs of my own and don’t have any idea what I would do without them. I also started off on Blogger (which I didn’t like either, people had no good way to follow my blog, just ask Jill we have some complications with that), and then I tried Weebly, and had the same problem before finally I decided to take the large step to converting over to WordPress. My blog has only grown since then. I’d have to agree with you when you said that one of the most important things about blogging is about enjoying what you do. Because then what’s the point if you’re not enjoying yourself? I like how well you’re able to incorporate your snark and humor into your posts. I still find it hard to do that.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Thank you, I had to mention my dog even though it’s nearly a year ago as what happened was one of the reasons I started a blog. I never tried weebly but couldn’t stand blogger, luckily I fared better with wordpress.
True and you’re the second person to mention enjoying what you do and it’s certainly true, blogging takes time and if you’re not enjoying it then it’s a waste of your time as you’re doing something you don’t like but I guess we all have times when we don’t enjoy it, formatting issues, struggling to write a review, etc but overall it should be fun and enjoyable.😀
Thank you, I do like adding sarcasm and humour to my posts, makes them slightly more personal and fun.😀

I found Weebly to be slightly better than Blogger but not by much. WordPress is definitely the best blogging platform out of those three. Formatting issues and struggling to write a review are times where I just have to step away from the computer a bit and make myself calm down because otherwise I’d just be miserable.

You can take anything and try to corrupt it bawhaha 😉 I think that is secretly (maybe not so secret now) one of the reasons I enjoy your blog and chatting with you. very surprised to see you do this one!
I appreciated your tips. Cannot argue with them in any way or shape. When you are right, you are right.
I wanted to say that I am sorry about Sully. I honestly mean that with deepest of sympathies. Pets are family and best friends. The pain and loss affect us in the same manner. I am not sure if we have ever discussed this but, but I work for a veterinary pharmacy and deal with pet owners and vet clinics on the regular. I have also lost my own best friend. So your story resonates with me and I am sorry it had to end the way it did. *Very tough guy hugs inserted here*

Thank you for saying about Sully. No, we haven’t discussed that you work for a vet pharmacy. I knew you worked for a pharmacy and that you’ve recently started working from home or homework!😂 But I admit, I presumed that it was work with people and not with pets.😀

One of the things I really enjoy about your blog is its transparency. We can definitely get a feel of the person you are from reading your posts and that’s always a plus in my book! Your writing feels genuine and honest; those are rare qualities nowadays. Not always due to non-existence but more for fear of being judged and misunderstood, I guess. Or, at least, I like to think it’s because of that.
I really enjoyed learning about your blogging journey and how the idea came to you. As always, it was a very entertaining read xD
Thank you so much for sharing and for the wonderful advice! More people should follow it 😉

Ha, transparency, I do try to be genuine and honest and agree that they are rare nowadays both for fear of being misunderstood and judged but also and here I’m being cynical also because people just aren’t as genuine and honest as they once were, it is the world in which we live.😞
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yeah I know… But could be a defense mechanism you know? Genuine and honest people often get taken advantage of and decide to change their ways in order not to be hurt anymore. I don’t want to believe they are born that way (even though many are and it’s a real shame).
LikeLiked by 1 person
You may not want to believe that they are born that way but sadly many are, life happens to lots of people and it affects and changes them but it doesn’t affect and change everyone and not everyone can blame how they are on something that has happened, some people are just born bad, yeah, I’m cynical.😂
I do agree though about it being a defence mechanism, if you’ve been taken advantage of it does affect you, even if it’s only in some minor way and people change because of that and unfortunately it’s mainly always the genuine and honest who get taken advantage of.😞
