The Friday Face-Off is a meme originally created by Books by Proxy, where the idea is to compare the different covers of a book with each week being a certain theme.

I only occasionally do the Face-Off nowadays after creating my own 200 Words or Less Friday feature (there isn’t one this week as my shoulder is still playing up). The Face-Off is a meme that I have always enjoyed as I find it cool to look a the various covers from different countries.

This weeks theme is: Bird “Some birds are not meant to be caged, that’s all. Their feathers are too bright, their songs are too sweet and wild”

Now, when I saw the theme “Bird” I immediately thought “woohoo” in the vein of Homer Simpson as I knew that there was bound to be some great covers out there featuring some stunning birds for me to look at……

…….Unfortunately I had jumped the gun as the theme didn’t mean that sort of bird and alas, it instead meant the “flying and flapping wings” type of bird and not the “cor blimey, that’s a stunner of a bird!” type of bird. And my woohoo moment soon turned into a doh!

Oh well, I’m sure there’s plenty of birds to be found on the internet so no harm done! 🙂 And after rectifying my mistake, I found a book that fits the theme perfectly and I give to you all:

  2. I quite like the 2 covers you have selected, I would have selected the exact 2. The first with the bird holding the string because it looks nice and a little mysterious. What does the string represent, is the bird the messenger of Death? lol. The second cover just reminds me of Jack the Ripper for some reason ( probably the English Streets haha).

      3. I meannnn that may have happened as well! 2 weeks from today I will be meeting my husband in person 😀 Don’t worry I’ll be sure to gush about it and post pictures lol.

    You call girls “birds?” As in, “that hot chick?” Or something like that?

    1. Yeah, bird is a British term when referring to girls like chick is, I’m americanised though and use a variety of words whereas most women only have one for me Yuck!😂

      I just added it to the start of the post for a bit of fun, hoping no one takes offence!

      Homer rules, gotta love Homer Stephy!😉

      1. I’m from Britain and no one I knows take offence to the use of the term “bird” so don’t worry about it. Hearing people ask a guy how their bird is, is quite common in my home town. They also use the term “mrs” even if they’re not married or been together very long. I personally found it funny. Love the Homer Simpson pieces too!

      2. Ha, yeah, lots of people use ‘mrs’ even when not they’re not married, lots of colourful words in the UK language.😂

        Homer is cool.😀 Alas, I got pulled up on a couple of things in a post a few weeks ago, no offence was meant and someone took offence to it, so I just hoped no one did would over the ‘bird’ bit as it was just fun to make the post more humorous.😀

  6. I like Cover A and Cover D. I think cover A is prettier, but cover D is creepier! I just added this book to my TBR. I’d never heard of it before.

  8. Cover B. I particularly like how it says ‘A Ghost Story’. It is definitely a book that I would pick up off a shelf to take a further look.

  10. I can see why you’ve picked those two, but I do like cover A for some reason. i don’t know whether it is the stop watch or the blue colour of the feathers, but it really stands out to me.

  17. lol… Love your take on the ‘bird’ theme… Funnily enough there was a cover on Lynn’s site last week sporting a scantily clad young lady looking more suitable for a sunbathing session than hacking lumps out of someone in a battle!

    Love your selection for this theme, though – and for me, it’s Cover F. Love the feeling of unease generated by that top-hatted chap marching into the murk:). Have a great week-end, Drew.

    hahaha @ bird… aye… you should go off on a tangent and do a Friday Face Off with the kind of birds on the covers as you want .. it would be interesting to see what you come up with 😀 Unless… of course… they’re like… the top of the shelf, hidden kind of “books” 😀

      1. 😀 😀 true that! Darn it, there’s a really good saying about taking offence in Estonia but no matter how I try to translate, it doesn’t deliver… something along the lines of: don’t take it into heart, take it into mouth! Very rude but very effective at the same time, it’s like a 2 in 1 advice a) not take offence and 2) if offence is still taken, then, well, blow me! 😀

        Rude and effective is great! A two for one! And, yeah, I’m of the view that if offence is taken then it’s tough sh*t and they should deal with it but that’s on something that people could take offence to, I get a bit confused when people take offence over something and I don’t know why, stand there or sit there after reading and think WTF did you take offence to/did I write wrong?!😂

        It’s just the world we live in nowadays, someone always takes offence to something.😞

        I hear you though… everything has to be politically correct nowadays and hold your on your hat of you use the wrong word, or phrase … it amuses me, though… I agree with one of the celebrities (can’t remember their name or anything) but they said- the funniest humor is the most darkest, offensive and close to reality… Anyway, it is what it is… and if you don’t take it into the heart- you’ll be able to spit it out. hehehe…

Exactly! 😀 hahaha…basically… an Estonian will easily tell you something rude and then follow it up with a sarcastic comment about not taking it personally, but rather ‘blowing it’ because it’s easer to ‘spit it out’ … ah, so much is lost in translation 😀 anyway… sorry to turn this comment secion into kind of smut 😀 but I know you can take it and we’re cool! *fist bump*

      6. Lmao, yeah, we’re cool and no worries, anything goes and it’s all fun though if anyone else takes offence to the comments its not my fault and they will just have to spit it out! 🙂
