My Newest Book Haul

book haul

Happy Saturday morning everyone, whether you be spending it chilling and reading or out and about socialising I hope that you all have a fantastic weekend. 🙂

These are my recently acquired books, as always thanks to the publishers and publicists for sending me this wondrous bounty.

Mageborn (Age of Dread #1) by Stephen Aryan.

Published by Orbit. Released on October 5th (UK).

I haven’t read the authors previous trilogy but this looks and sounds intriguing so fingers crossed that it is good. 🙂

It’s been ten years since the battlemage war, where thousands died as mages sundered the earth and split the sky.

Habreel believes eradicating magic is the only way to ensure a lasting peace. He will do anything to achieve his goal, even if it means murdering every child born with the ability.

As deaths involving magic increase and the seat of magical learning – the Red Tower – falls under suspicion, two students and one lawbringer must do everything they can to combat Habreel and his followers, before magic disappears from the world for good.

The Tethered Mage by Melissa Caruso (Swords and Fire book #1).

Published by Orbit. Released October 26th (UK).

This looks and sounds awesome and with cover quotes from both R.J Barker the author of the excellent Age of Assassins and Anna Smith-Spark the author of The Court of Broken Knives. Well, again its fingers crossed that it is a good one. 🙂

Charming, intelligent, fast-moving, beautifully atmospheric’ Genevieve Cogman, author of The Invisible Library

In the Raverran Empire, magic is scarce and those born with power are strictly controlled – taken as children and conscripted into the Falcon Army.

Zaira has lived her life on the streets to avoid this fate, hiding her mage-mark and thieving to survive. But hers is a rare and dangerous magic, one that could threaten the entire empire.

Lady Amalia Cornaro was never meant to be a Falconer. Heiress and scholar, she was born into a treacherous world of political machinations. But fate has bound the heir and the mage. And as war looms on the horizon, a single spark could turn their city into a pyre.

‘The Tethered Mage spins two captivating tales: a battle of wills between a feisty heroine and her bonded warlock, and a battle of wits between an empire and its rivals. Stuffed with intrigue, romance, and betrayal, this is a scrumptious read’ Vic James, Author of Gilded Cage

Intricate and enticing as silk brocade. Caruso’s heroine is a strong, intelligent young woman in a beguiling, beautifully evoked Renaissance world of high politics, courtly intrigue, love and loyalty – and fire warlocks’ Anna Smith Spark, author of The Court of Broken Knives

A Plague of Giants (Seven Kennings) by Kevin Hearne.

Published by Orbit. Released October 19th (UK).

I did a Waiting on Wednesday post for this a few weeks ago and surprisingly it turned up in the post this week, good karma and awesome! 🙂

‘TRULY EPIC FANTASY’ James Islington, author of The Shadow of What Was Lost

From the east came the Bone Giants. From the south, the fire-wielding Hathrim.

It was an invasion that sparked war across the six nations of Teldwen. Now the kingdom’s only hope is the discovery of a new form of magic – one that will call the wondrous beasts of the world to fight by the side of humankind.

In the start of a thrilling new series, the New York Times bestselling author of The Iron Druid Chronicles creates an unforgettable fantasy world of warring giants and elemental magic.

‘This isn’t just a breath of fresh air for the genre, it’s a damned hurricane’
Jason M. Hough, New York Times bestselling author

‘A rare masterpiece that’s both current and timeless . . . merging the fantasy bones of Tolkien and Rothfuss with a wide cast of characters who’ll break your heart’
Delilah S. Dawson

Split Feather (Daughter of the Midnight Sun #1) by Deborah A. Wolf.

Published by Titan. Released September 12th (UK).

I really enjoyed Wolf’s previous book The Dragon’s Legacy when it was released earlier this year and so, I am intrigued to read her Urban fantasy book. Though, Urban fantasy isn’t my jam so we shall see how I get on with it.

Siggy Aleksov sees demons and talks with creatures she knows aren’t really there. Taken from her family as a child, she is dogged by memories of abandonment, abuse, and mental health issues. Siggy suffers from a hot temper, cluster headaches, caffeine addiction, and terminal foul language.

She complicates her life even more when she saves the life of a talented assassin sent to kill her. Deciding to get the hell out of Dodge, Siggy travels to the Alaska bush to find out who she really is. The answer is more fantastic that she could have imagined and she can imagine a lot.

Senlin Ascends (Book One of the Books of Babel) by Josiah Bancroft.

Published by Orbit. released January 18th 2018 (UK).

This is an ARC copy and it’s not out until January so I may well put it on the backburner for a while and save it for Christmas time and those cold, dark and lonely nights. 😦 The book was originally self-published and I have read some fantastic reviews from my fellow bloggers for it. So, I have high hopes that it will be an amazing read. 🙂

‘One of my favourite books of all time’ Mark Lawrence

‘An extraordinary debut that is well worthy of the hype. A beautifully written, highly engaging page-turning masterpiece’ Fantasy Book Review

Mild-mannered headmaster Thomas Senlin has always wanted to see the Tower of Babel. Immense as a mountain, the ancient tower is the greatest marvel in the world, comprising unnumbered ringdoms stacked one on the other like the layers of a cake. Lured by the grand promises of a guidebook, Senlin takes his new bride, Marya, on the honeymoon of their dreams. But no sooner do they arrive at the Tower than Senlin loses her in the teeming throng.

Senlin’s search for Marya carries him through madhouses, ballrooms and burlesque theatres. He must endure betrayal, assassination attempts and the long guns of a flying fortress. But if he hopes to ever see his wife again, Senlin will have to do more than just survive – this quiet man of letters must become a man of action.

Dead Woman Walking by Sharon Bolton.

Published by Corgi. Released August 24th (UK).

Ha! I bet you didn’t expect the post to end with a crime book! 😉

This isn’t actually a book for me but one that I picked up brand new from the second-hand books bookshelf where I work. Alas, Mother Tattooed Book Geek isn’t a fan of fantasy and enjoys crime/thriller books. I saw this, thought that it sounded interesting and picked it up for her. Have any of you crime bloggers read it? Is it any good?

‘A real race-through read. Bolton’s writing is pacy, and features a brilliant twist I wish I’d written’ Clare Mackintosh, bestselling author of I See You (in Shortlist)

‘For once, the description “impossible to put down” is full merited, for this is an absolute page-turner’ Daily Mail

Just before dawn in the hills near the Scottish border, thirteen passengers on a hot-air balloon flight witness a brutal murder. Within the next hour, all but one of them will be dead.

Alone, scared and trusting no-one, she flees for her life, running to the one place she feels safe. But she’s seen the killer’s face, and he’s seen hers – and he won’t rest until he’s eliminated the last witness to his crime . . .

‘With Dead Woman Walking, Sharon Bolton exceeds her own high standards of excellence. It grips from the start . . . The plot merges skilfully, with many splendid twists along the way’ The Times

‘Bolton is a gripping storyteller with fine, haunted characters’ Peter James

‘Crepuscular, uncanny mystery’ Guardian

‘Bolton establishes a forbidding atmosphere . . . A slippery, devious narrative in which things are not always what they seem’ Crime Scene

    1. They certainly do, Orbit have some great fantasy titles and aren’t shy on sending through out either.👌

Cool, be interesting to see what you make of Split Feather, you didn’t finish her The Dragon’s Legacy book did you? – if I remember correctly.😂 I’m not sure what I’ll make of it as I’m not an urban fantasy fan but thought it worth giving a go, see if it changes my mind on the genre.

  2. Oo some good looking books! I like the cover for ‘A Plague of Giants’…with that wind-swept, gazing-into-the-distance cover, it could almost pass for one of ‘those’ books ;P
I hope you enjoy them! 😀
