Friday Face-Off November 10th: A cover featuring a key.

face off

The Friday Face-Off is a meme created by Books by Proxy, where the idea is to compare the different covers of a book with each week being a certain theme.

This weeks theme is: ‘zip it, lock it and throw away the key‘ – a cover featuring a key.

My choice:

The Key (Sancti trilogy #2) by Simon Toyne.

This is the UK cover and I think it’s the best out of the choices available. It’s a similar design to the US but the dark grey background really makes the flaming key pop compared to the blue background of the US cover and the slightly simpler design looks smart too.

Now, The Key (Sancti trilogy #2) by Simon Toyne isn’t a fantasy book and when I first read that the theme for this week was a cover featuring a ‘key‘ one book immediately sprang to mind, The Liar’s Key (The Red Queen’s War #2) by Mark Lawrence. However! Said book doesn’t actually feature a key in the cover design, only in the books name so I thought that I’d get around that little obstacle and obey the rules and use The Key by Simon Toyne as the book featuring a key on the cover and then, add The Liar’s Key by Mark Lawrence as an extra to the post with the name of the book featuring the word key!

The Liar’s Key (The Red Queen’s War #2) by Mark Lawrence.

This is the Portuguese cover and it’s my favourite, very similar to the UK paper and hardback versions but with a slightly darker overall aesthetic and I also think that the font for the word ‘Vermelha‘ is quality and then there’s the little white skull which I just think looks cool! 🙂

Thoughts on the covers for both books?? Agree?? Disagree??

  1. Ooo I think for the first set of covers, I’m with you on your choice. I agree, the darker background really makes the key stand out. What’s going on with the cover that’s third down the left column!? Looks like she’s overdone the highlighter (cosmetic term since I assume you don’t know much about cosmetics :P)
The first two covers from the second set make me so sad…those poor ickle puppy dogs! 😦 Again, I agree with your choice, though. The red and the black and the cloaked figure facing away scream “Dark and brooding!”.
