My latest books

book haul

The latest books that I have received from publishers. I also received a copy of Strange Weather by Joe Hill which was released by Gollancz on November 7th and I have already reviewed.

I also received a proof copy of A Time of Dread by John Gwynne which is released on January 11th 2018 by Tor/Pan Macmillan and which I have already done a separate haul post for because I was excited about the book as Gwynne’s The Faithful and the Fallen series is my favourite fantasy series.

My new books:

Year One by Nora Roberts.

Published by Piatkus on December 5th 2017.

I’d already received a proof copy of this book what now seems ages ago at the end of August, read it straight away and have since been sitting on my review to post on the release date. So, call me shocked when a finished copy turned up! It’s a stunning looking book and is a great read too:)

With one drop of blood, the old world is gone for ever. And in its place, something extraordinary begins…

They call it The Doom – a deadly pandemic that starts on a cold New Year’s Eve in the Scottish countryside. There’s something mysterious about the virus and the way it spreads. As billions fall sick and die, some survivors find themselves invested with strange, unexpected abilities.

Lana, a New York chef, has the power to move things and people with her will. Fred can summon light in the darkness. Jonah, a paramedic, sees snatches of the future in those he touches. Katie gives birth to twins, and suspects that she has brought fresh magic into the world, along with new life.

But The Doom affects people differently. Along with the light, a dark and terrifying magic will also rise. As the remaining authorities round up the immune and the ‘Uncannies’ for testing, Lana, Katie and others flee New York in search of a safe haven. The old world is over, and Year One has begun.

A Map of the Dark by Karen Ellis.

Published by Mulholland Books on January 11th 2018.

This was surprise book post, didn’t even know that I was on the publisher mailing list, don’t really read crime/thriller books either but it sounds good and I’m looking forward to trying something different. I’m on the blog tour in January and will be reviewing the book for that.

A girl missing
A woman, searching
A killer, planning…

A thrilling new FBI series for fans of Tess Gerritsen and Karin Slaughter.

FBI Agent Elsa Myers finds missing people.
She knows how it feels to be lost…

Though her father lies dying in a hospital north of New York City, Elsa cannot refuse a call for help. A teenage girl has gone missing from Forest Hills, Queens, and during the critical first hours of the case, a series of false leads hides the fact that she did not go willingly.

With each passing hour, as the hunt for Ruby deepens into a search for a man who may have been killing for years, the case starts to get underneath Elsa’s skin. Everything she has buried – her fraught relationship with her sister and niece, her self-destructive past, her mother’s death – threatens to resurface, with devastating consequences.

In order to save the missing girl, she may have to lose herself…and return to the darkness she’s been hiding from for years.

The Feed by Nick Clark Windo.

Published by Headline on January 25th 2018.

I’m on the blog tour for this in January so that’s when I’ll be reviewing. I have already started reading this and I’m thoroughly enjoying it so far. 🙂

THE FEED by Nick Clark Windo is a startling and timely debut which presents a world as unique and vividly imagined as STATION ELEVEN and THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS.

Tom and Kate’s daughter turns six tomorrow, and they have to tell her about sleep.
If you sleep unwatched, you could be Taken. If you are Taken, then watching won’t save you.
Nothing saves you.

Your knowledge. Your memories. Your dreams.
If all you are is on the Feed, what will you become when the Feed goes down?

For Tom and Kate, in the six years since the world collapsed, every day has been a fight for survival. And when their daughter, Bea, goes missing, they will question whether they can even trust each other anymore.

The threat is closer than they realise…

Devil’s Day by Andrew Michael Hurley.

Published by John Murray on October 19th 2017.

I requested this ages ago from bookbridgr as it sounded different, had ‘devil’ in the title and I liked the look of the cover. I’d given up on it arriving and then lo and behold, it came yesterday!

Every autumn, John Pentecost returns to the Lancashire farm where he grew up to help gather the sheep from the moors. Generally, very little changes in the Briardale Valley, but this year things are different. His grandfather – known to everyone as the Gaffer – has died and John’s new wife, Katherine, is accompanying him for the first time.

Every year, the Gaffer would redraw the boundary lines of the village, with pen and paper but also through the remembrance of folk tales, family stories and timeless communal rituals which keep the sheep safe from the Devil. This year, though, the determination of some members of the community to defend those boundary lines has strengthened, and John and Katherine must decide where their loyalties lie, and whether they are prepared to make the sacrifices necessary to join the tribe…

Gripping, unsettling and beautifully written, Andrew Michael Hurley’s new novel asks how much we owe to tradition, and how far we will go to belong.

And, it’s not a book but a game I treated myself to on Black Friday so my blogging may well be rather lapse, well, even more lapse than normal! 😉

  1. I got A Map of the Dark too. I’ll be curious to hear your thoughts on it when you get the chance to read it. 😀 And maaaan Wolfenstein 2 sounds phenomenal. Got a friend who recently got it on Black Friday and has been hooked ever since. Might have to think about picking it up myself. Enjoy!

    1. Cool, I hope you enjoy A Map of the Dark, did you request it or was it that much loved surprise book post?

Wolfenstein is great, I’m not far into it but it’s really good so far, can’t beat killing nazi’s though I’m surprised at some of the content in it.

  2. Excellent haul (as you know.. I fail at sharing mine). I am curious about the Nora Roberts title. Love to see you receiving so many good titles and some nice surprises as well 🙂

Gaming wise, I bought the nonhubs a PS4 VR for his Bday so that has been occupying game time here and I have also been watching him play through the Uncharted series. He is getting a new system soon 😉 he doesn’t know that.. so I need to figure out which games to pick up. My vertigo allows for so little. I did discover I can play Zelda on our Switch without getting sick haha. Go me.. playing Nintendo.. feels like I am young again 😛

    1. Uncharted is fantastic, apart from the damn puzzles! I always struggle with puzzles! Often I can solve the hard ones really easily and then it’s the simple ones I struggle with and sort of sigh when I finally figure out the very obvious solution.😂

That’s cool that you can play Zelda, always has been a fantastic franchise with some truly classic games.

      1. I am actually really enjoying Breath of the Wild! I haven;t played Zelda in years, but I remember it was the game of games. Link’s adventures were the very reason I fell for RPGs.

Yeah, he just finished Uncharted (the last one tonight). He seems haha. It looks incredible! I only watched him with a few of the puzzles, but he gets into those.

      2. I haven’t played the latest Uncharted, the new spin-off one, my last was Uncharted 4, epic and I didn’t fail at any puzzles in it, that’s a win!😂 Uncharted 2 had some pain in the ass puzzles I remember.😠

Yeah, that’s true about Zelda, the game of games.

  3. Blimey – Nora Roberts writing an apocalyptic tale?? The cover looks wonderful… I haven’t ever read her J.D. Robb sci fi whodunits, though Himself is a fan – I ought to get around to them. And Wolfenstein… hm… wasn’t the original where you ran through a maze like a rat, blasting away at the Nazi hoodlums who would pop out all set to turn you into a red-pocked sieve? It’s one my son deigned to let me play half a lifetime ago on the grounds that I couldn’t get it wrong… I used to find it very cathartic as I was dealing with a couple of teenagers at the time. Thank you for sharing your book haul and I hope you enjoy the game.

    1. Yes, that sounds about right for Wolfenstein, it’s a franchise that’s been around for ages, started way back on the nes in the 80’s I believe.

Yep! Nora Roberts wrote post-apocalyptic! And did a good job too after I’d got over the fact she writes romance!😂

    1. Strange Weather is fantastic. I enjoyed Hill’s previous book, The Fireman but didn’t think it was amazing whereas Strange Weather, all four of the stories in it are top quality and it’s a stunning read.

Nora Roberts does post-apocalyptic surprisingly well, I really enjoyed the book.

      1. Awesome, can’t wait to read both of them! And I’m not surprised Nora Roberts was good with something other than romance now that I really think about it. I read her In the Garden trilogy (which ARE romance novels), but they were also paranormal mysteries with a creepy ghost. I really liked them!

      2. There is some romance in Year One but it works with the story and I thought it added to the book and I hate romance!😂 I guess a good writer is a good writer regardless of genre and the fact she can write different genres shows she’s good. She also writes under the name JD Robb in another genre too.😂
