book haul

My latest book post courtesy of some wonderful publicists and publishers (of course, the authors who write the books as without the authors there would be no books).

Season of Storms (Witcher #6) by Andrej Sapkowski, translated by David French.

Published by Gollancz on May 22nd, 2018.

I’m a big fan of The Witcher games and have read a couple of the books in the series. This one can be read as a standalone and I was intrigued to give it a go. I actually posted my review yesterday and it was an OK read, enjoyable and good but not what you would call ‘great’. My review !!HERE!!

Geralt. The witcher whose mission is to protect ordinary people from the monsters created with magic. A mutant who has the task of killing unnatural beings. He uses a magical sign, potions and the pride of every witcher – two swords, steel and silver.
But what would happen if Geralt lost his weapons?

Andrzej Sapkowski returns to his most popular hero in a stand-alone novel where Geralt fights, travels and loves again, Dandelion sings and flies from trouble to trouble, sorcerers are scheming … and across the whole world clouds are gathering – the season of storms is coming…

Awakened by James S. Murray and Darren Wearmouth.

Published by Harper Voyager on June 28th, 2018.

A co-written book by Murr from Impractical Jokers, nuff said!

After years of waiting, New York’s newest subway line is finally ready, an express train that connects the city with the burgeoning communities across the Hudson River. The shining jewel of this state-of-the-art line is a breathtaking visitors’ pavilion beneath the river.  Major dignitaries, including New York City’s Mayor and the President of the United States, are in attendance for the inaugural run, as the first train slowly pulls in.

Under the station’s bright ceiling lights, the shiny silver cars gleam. But as the train comes closer into view, a far different scene becomes visible.

All the train’s cars are empty.

All the cars’ interiors are drenched in blood.

As chaos descends, all those in the pavilion scramble to get out. But the horror is only beginning. High levels of deadly methane fill the tunnels. The structure begins to flood. For those who don’t drown, choke or spark an explosion, another terrifying danger awaits—the thing that killed all those people on the train. It’s out there…and it’s coming.

There’s something living beneath New York City, and it’s not happy we’ve woken it up.

Retribution Road by Antonin Varenne, translated by Sam Taylor.

Published by MacLehose Press on July 12th, 2018.

I saw this on bookbridgr and thought it sounded really good.

“We owe you our lives, Sergeant, but you are our worst nightmare . . .”

Burma, 1852. Sergeant Arthur Bowman, a sergeant in the East India Company, is sent on a secret mission during the Second Anglo-Burmese War. But the expedition is foiled – his men are captured and tortured. Throughout their ordeal, a single word becomes Bowman’s mantra, a word that will stiffen their powers of endurance in the face of unimaginable suffering: “Survival”. But for all that, only a handful escape with their lives.

Some years later in London, battling his ghosts through a haze of alcohol and opium, Bowman discovers a mutilated corpse in a sewer. The victim appears to have been subjected to the same torments as Bowman endured in the Burmese jungle. And the word “Survival” has been daubed in blood by the body’s side. Persuaded that the culprit is one of the men who shared his captivity, Bowman resolves to hunt him down.

From the Burmese jungle to the slums of London to the conquest of the Wild West, Antonin Varenne takes us on a thrilling journey full of sound and unabated fury, reviving the lapsed tradition of the great writers of boundless adventure. Sergeant Bowman belongs to that breed of heroes who inhabit the imaginations of Conrad, Kipling, Stevenson . . . Lost soldiers who have plunged into the heart of darkness and will cross the globe in search of vengeance and redemption.

Dreadful Company (Greta Helsing #2) by Vivian Shaw.

Published by Orbit on July 26th, 2018.

I really enjoyed Strange Practice, the first Greta book finding it to be a weird and quirky read. This was a surprise book from Orbit and I am looking forward to delving back into the quirkiness!

61pYm-po+OL._SX332_BO1,204,203,200_

When Greta Helsing, doctor to the undead, is called to Paris to present at a medical conference, she expects nothing more exciting than professional discourse on zombie reconstructive surgery.

Unfortunately for Greta, Paris happens to be infested with a coven of vampires – and not the civilised kind. If she hopes to survive, Greta must navigate the maze of ancient catacombs beneath the streets, where there is more to find than simply dead men’s bones.

Empire of Silence (Sun Eater #1) by Christopher Ruocchio.

Published by Gollancz on July 5th, 2018.

Sounds EPIC, simply as that!

51rRLQ21OsL._SX325_BO1,204,203,200_

Hadrian Marlowe, a man revered as a hero and despised as a murderer, chronicles his tale in the galaxy-spanning debut of the Sun Eater series, merging the best of space opera and epic fantasy.

It was not his war.

On the wrong planet, at the right time, for the best reasons, Hadrian Marlowe started down a path that could only end in fire. The galaxy remembers him as a hero: the man who burned every last alien Cielcin from the sky. They remember him as a monster: the devil who destroyed a sun, casually annihilating four billion human lives–even the Emperor himself–against Imperial orders.

But Hadrian was not a hero. He was not a monster. He was not even a soldier.

Fleeing his father and a future as a torturer, Hadrian finds himself stranded on a strange, backwater world. Forced to fight as a gladiator and navigate the intrigues of a foreign planetary court, he will find himself fighting a war he did not start, for an Empire he does not love, against an enemy he will never understand.

Ravencry (The Raven’s Mark #2) by Ed McDonald.

Published by Gollancz on June 28th, 2018.

Blackwing, the first book in The Raven’s Mark series was in my top three bokks of 2017 (along with Kings of The Wyld by Nicholas Eames and Tyrant’s Throne by Sebastien de Castell) and suffice to say, Ravencry is one of my most anticipated reads for 2018!

51zVkGROv+L._SX323_BO1,204,203,200_

For Ryhalt Galharrow, working for Crowfoot as a Blackwing captain is about as bad as it gets – especially when his orders are garbled, or incoherent, or impossible to carry out.

The Deep Kings are hurling fire from the sky, a ghost in the light known only as the Bright Lady had begun to manifest in visions across the city, and the cult that worship her grasp for power while the city burns around them.

Galharrow may not be able to do much about the cult – or about strange orders from the Nameless – but when Crowfoot’s arcane vault is breached and an object of terrible power is stolen, he’s propelled into a race against time to recover it. Only to do that, he needs answers, and finding them means travelling into nightmare: to the very heart of the Misery.

A Demon in Silver (War of The Archons #1) by R. S. Ford.

Published by Titan on June 12th, 2018.

I loved Ford’s previous trilogy The Steelhaven trilogy and I am really looking forward to delving into this book, it both looks and epic.

51esmkHyZ9L._SX326_BO1,204,203,200_

In a world where magic has disappeared, rival nations vie for power in a continent devastated by war.

When a young farm girl, Livia, demonstrates magical powers for the first time in a century there are many across the land that will kill to obtain her power. The Duke of Gothelm’s tallymen, the blood-soaked Qeltine Brotherhood, and cynical mercenary Josten Cade: all are searching for Livia and the power she wields.

But Livia finds that guardians can come from the most unlikely places… and that the old gods are returning to a world they abandoned.

Books that I have purchased.

Ya know, cos I really needed more books! 🙂

Hangman (Fawkes and Baxter #2) by Daniel Cole.

Published by Trapeze on March 22nd, 2018.

I loved Ragdoll, the previous book when I read it earlier in the year after snagging it from the charity bookshelf at work and have been meaning to pick this one up for a while, I finally succumb to desire and bought it, the voices in my head told me too! 😉

A detective with no one to trust
A killer with nothing to lose

18 months after the ‘Ragdoll’ murders, a body is found hanging from Brooklyn Bridge, the word ‘BAIT’ carved into the chest.

In London a copycat killer strikes, branded with the word ‘PUPPET’, forcing DCI Emily Baxter into an uneasy partnership with the detectives on the case, Special Agents Rouche and Curtis.

Each time they trace a suspect, the killer is one step ahead. With the body count rising on both sides of the Atlantic, can they learn to trust each other and identify who is holding the strings before it is too late?

Sleeping in the Ground (DCI Bans #24) by Peter Robinson.

Published by Hodder & Stoughton on 31st May, 2018.

Yeah, I liked the blurb on this one and no, I haven’t read any of the other books in the series!

51OAFXibg7L._SX323_BO1,204,203,200_

shocking mass murder occurs at a wedding in a small Dales church and a huge manhunt follows. Eventually, the shooter is run to ground and things take their inevitable course.

But Banks is plagued with doubts as to exactly what happened outside the church that day, and why. Struggling with the death of his first serious girlfriend and the return of profiler Jenny Fuller into his life, Banks feels the need to dig deeper into the murders, and as he does so, he uncovers forensic and psychological puzzles that lead him to the past secrets that might just provide the answers he is looking for.

When the surprising truth becomes clear, it is almost too late.

Thirteen (Eddie Flynn #4) by Steve Cavanagh.

Published by Orion on June 14th, 2018.

Yeah, I blame my fellow bloggers for this one as they all seem to love it and thusly, I decided that I really should read it too, it is their fault! 🙂

THE SERIAL KILLER ISN’T ON TRIAL.

HE’S ON THE JURY…

Murder wasn’t the hard part. It was just the start of the game.

Joshua Kane has been preparing for this moment his whole life. He’s done it before. But this is the big one.

This is the murder trial of the century. And Kane has killed to get the best seat in the house.

But there’s someone on his tail. Someone who suspects that the killer isn’t the man on trial.

Kane knows time is running out – he just needs to get to the conviction without being discovered.

So there you have it, loads of books for me to read and I am a slow reader, it’s not looking good for me and I am sure there are more new books coming out that I will want to read too!

  1. AMAZING haul, love! And I hope the last half of 2018 has a buddy read in store for us! Also, I miss you! I feel like I’ve been so MIA! But I hope you’re having happy reading and that the new season is treating you kindly! 💖xx

    1. Thank you, it certainly is a fantastic haul, if we gloss over the fact I’m a slow reader and it’s a lot of books!😂😝📚

I am having happy reading, thank you, plenty of great books recently which always makes reading a pleasure.👍

The new season is OK, probably about the same as ever. I hope things are going well for you?

I think it’s me who is often MIA, my blogging has been very lapse for a few months now, I manage to post but I can never keep up with reading the blogs I follow and I’m terrible at commenting on posts too, hashtag Drewisaterribleblogger.😂

A buddy read would be cool, I’m not really clued up on what they involve though (apart from reading the book together) so you’d have to fill me in.👍
