I have been rather lazy with my book haul posts recently. It’s been scorching hot in the UK (I prefer the colder weather) and well, ya know, procrastination too!😱😂😝
These are my recent books, apart from the ones that I purchased on the Kindle all of them are surprise and unsolicited book post! Now, sure, if King of Assassins and Bloody Rose hadn’t arrived then I’d have asked (begged) for a copy of each but they did and so, I didn’t need to.😉
The Sea Queen (Half Drowned King Trilogy #2) by Linnea Hartsuyker.
Published by Little Brown on August 2nd, 2018.
I’m not going to lie until the book arrived I hadn’t heard of the trilogy! Sounds good though.👍📚
Ragnvald Eysteinsson is now king of Sogn, but fighting battles for King Harald keeps him away from home, as he confronts treachery and navigates a political landscape that grows more dangerous the higher he rises.
Ragnvald’s sister Svanhild has found the freedom and adventure she craves at the side of the rebel explorer Solvi Hunthiofsson, though not without a cost. She longs for a home where her quiet son can grow strong, and a place where she can put down roots, even as Solvi’s ambition draws him back to Norway’s battles again and keeps her divided from her brother.
As a growing rebellion unites King Harald’s enemies, Ragnvald suspects that some Norse nobles are not loyal to Harald’s dream of a unified Norway. He sets a plan in motion to defeat all of his enemies, and bring his sister back to his side, while Svanhild finds herself with no easy decisions, and no choices that will leave her truly free. Their actions will hold irrevocable repercussions for the fates of those they love and for Norway itself.
The Sea Queen returns to the fjords and halls of Viking-Age Scandinavia, a world of violence and prophecy, where honor is challenged by shifting alliances, and vengeance is always a threat to peace.
Rosewater by Tade Thompson.
Published by Orbit on September 20th, 2018.
Sounds interesting but SFF/alien invasion is a very hit or miss genre for me and I have to be in the right mood to want to read it.
Rosewater is a town on the edge. A community formed around the edges of a mysterious alien biodome, its residents comprise the hopeful, the hungry and the helpless – people eager for a glimpse inside the dome or a taste of its rumoured healing powers.
Kaaro is a government agent with a criminal past. He has seen inside the biodome, and doesn’t care to again – but when something begins killing off others like himself, Kaaro must defy his masters to search for an answer, facing his dark history and coming to a realisation about a horrifying future.
The Fifth Ward: Friendly Fire by Dale Lucas.
Published by Orbit on August 9th, 2018.
I really enjoyed the first The Fifth Ward book, it was like a buddy cop movie in a fantasy setting and I’ll be interested to delve back into Lucas’s world.
Humans, orcs, mages, elves and dwarves all jostle for success and survival in the cramped quarters of the city of Yenara, while understaffed Watch Wardens struggle to keep its citizens in line.
In the most dangerous district in the city, Rem and Torval have been perfecting their good cop, bad cop routine. But when a perplexing case of arson leads to a series of gruesome murders, the two partners must challenge their own assumptions and loyalties if they are to wrest justice from the chaos and keep their ward from tearing itself apart.
King of Assassins (The Wounded Kingdom #3) by RJ Barker.
Published by Orbit on August 9th, 2018.
Loved it! Already read and reviewed it, the best book of the trilogy and a fantastic conclusion.Find my review !!HERE!!
THE KING IS DEAD, LONG LIVE THE KING . . .
Many years of peace have passed in Maniyadoc, years of relative calm for the assassin Girton Club-Foot. Even the Forgetting Plague, which ravaged the rest of the kingdoms, seemed to pass them by. But now Rufra ap Vthyr eyes the vacant High-King’s throne and will take his court to the capital, a rat’s nest of intrigue and murder, where every enemy he has ever made will gather and the endgame of twenty years of politics and murder will be played out in his bid to become the King of all Kings.
Friends become enemies, enemies become friends and the god of death, Xus the Unseen, stands closer than ever – casting his shadow over everything most dear to Girton.
Bloody Rose (The Band #2) by Nicholas Eames.
Published by Orbit on August 30th, 2018.
Kings of the Wyld was my book of the year for 2017 and this was my most anticipated read for 2018! High expectations, I’m currently reading it and those expectations have been met and more.👍📚
Tam Hashford is tired of working at her local pub, slinging drinks for world-famous mercenaries and listening to the bards sing of adventure and glory in the world beyond her sleepy hometown.
When the biggest mercenary band of all rolls into town, led by the infamous Bloody Rose, Tam jumps at the chance to sign on as their bard. It’s adventure she wants-and adventure she gets as the crew embark on a quest that will end in one of two ways: glory or death.
IT’S TIME TO TAKE A WALK ON THE WYLD SIDE
Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri.
Published by Orbit on November 15th, 2018.
Sounds interesting.
Mehr is a girl trapped between two cultures. Her father comes from the ruling classes of the empire but her mother’s people were outcasts, Amrithi nomads who worshipped the spirits of the sands. Caught one night performing these forbidden rites, Mehr is brought to the attention of the Emperor’s most feared mystics, who force her into their service by way of an arranged marriage.
She discovers that her new husband is a mysterious, enslaved Amrithi with abilities like her own: together they must use every ounce of cunning, power and will they possess to resist the order’s cruel agenda – and should they fail, the spirits themselves may awaken seeking vengeance…
Foundryside (The Founders #1) by Robert Jackson Bennett.
Published by Jo Fletcher on August 23rd, 2018.
I’ve not read RJB’s previous trilogy but seen many good things written about it and I’m interested to read a book by him and this sounds really good.
She thought it was just another job. But her discovery could bring the city to its knees . . .
The city of Tevanne runs on scrivings, industrialised magical inscriptions that make inanimate objects sentient; they power everything, from walls to wheels to weapons. Scrivings have brought enormous progress and enormous wealth – but only to the four merchant Houses who control them. Everyone else is a servant or slave, or they eke a precarious living in the hellhole called the Commons.
There’s not much in the way of work for an escaped slave like Sancia Grado, but she has an unnatural talent that makes her one of the best thieves in the city. When she’s offered a lucrative job to steal an ancient artefact from a heavily guarded warehouse, Sancia agrees, dreaming of leaving the Commons – but instead, she finds herself the target of a murderous conspiracy. Someone powerful in Tevanne wants the artefact, and Sancia dead – and whoever it is already wields power beyond imagining.
Sancia will need every ally, and every ounce of wits at her disposal, if she is to survive – because if her enemy gets the artefact and unlocks its secrets, thousands will die, and, even worse, it will allow ancient evils back into the world and turn their city into a devastated battleground.

Sounds intriguing and it has a cool cover.👍📚
1316. On the wilds of Dartmoor stands the isolated Priory of St Mary, home to the Sisters of the Knights of St John. People journey from afar in search of healing at the holy well that lies beneath its chapel.
But the locals believe Dartmoor was theirs long before Christianity came to the land. And not all who visit seek miracles. When three strangers reach the moor, fear begins to stir as the well’s waters run with blood.
What witchcraft have the young woman, the Knight of St John and the blind child brought with them?
The Sisters will need to fight for everything they hold dear as the ghosts of the Old World gather in their midst.
The Craftsman by Sharon Bolton.
Published by Trapeze on May 3rd, 2018.
A book I’d been looking forward to since I read about it before its release. Alas, too many books and never enough time meant I’d yet to pick it up then when I saw it on offer for only £0.99p on the Kindle I snagged it.
Devoted father or merciless killer?
His secrets are buried with him.
Florence Lovelady’s career was made when she convicted coffin-maker Larry Glassbrook of a series of child murders 30 years ago. Like something from our worst nightmares the victims were buried…ALIVE.
Larry confessed to the crimes; it was an open and shut case. But now he’s dead, and events from the past start to repeat themselves.
Did she get it wrong all those years ago?
Or is there something much darker at play?
The Bone Keeper by Luca Vesti.
Published by Simon and Schuster on March 8th, 2018.
I picked this up on the Kindle for £0.99p as the premise sounds chilling.
What if the figure that haunted your nightmares as child, the myth of the man in the woods, was real?
He’ll slice your flesh.
Your bones he’ll keep.Twenty years ago, four teenagers went exploring in the local woods, trying to find to the supposed home of The Bone Keeper. Only three returned.
Now, a woman is found wandering the streets of Liverpool, horrifically injured, claiming to have fled the Bone Keeper. Investigating officer DC Louise Henderson must convince sceptical colleagues that this urban myth might be flesh and blood. But when a body is unearthed in the woodland the woman has fled from, the case takes on a much darker tone.
The disappeared have been found. And their killer is watching every move the police make.
Six Stories (Six Stories #1) by Matt Wesolowski.
Published by Orenda books on December 20th, 2016.
I loved Hydra, the second Six Stories book when I picked it up cheap on the Kindle and when I saw that the first book was free when I signed up for The Crime Lounge newsletter, well, I thought, why not!👍📚 Looking forward to getting around to reading it.
One body. Six stories. Which one is true?
1997. Scarclaw Fell. The body of teenager Tom Jeffries is found at an outward bound centre. Verdict? Misadventure. But not everyone is convinced. And the truth of what happened in the beautiful but eerie fell is locked in the memories of the tight-knit group of friends who embarked on that fateful trip, and the flimsy testimony of those living nearby.
2017. Enter elusive investigative journalist Scott King, whose podcast examinations of complicated cases have rivalled the success of Serial, with his concealed identity making him a cult internet figure. In a series of six interviews, King attempts to work out how the dynamics of a group of idle teenagers conspired with the sinister legends surrounding the fell to result in Jeffries’ mysterious death. And who’s to blame…
As every interview unveils a new revelation, you’ll be forced to work out for yourself how Tom Jeffries died, and who is telling the truth.
A chilling, unpredictable and startling thriller, Six Stories is also a classic murder mystery with a modern twist, and a devastating ending.
