Welcome to my latest book haul. As always my thanks to the publishers and publicists for this wondrous bounty. 🙂
Received for Review Consideration:
Halcyon by Rio Youers.
Published by Titan Books on October 23rd, 2018.
I’m on the blog tour for this book on Thursday with an excerpt and it sounds really good. Looking forward to getting around to reading it at some point. 🙂
Halcyon is the answer for anyone who wants to escape, but paradise isn’t what it seems.
A self-sustaining community on a breathtakingly beautiful island, Halcyon is run for people who want to live without fear, crime or greed. Its leader has dedicated her life to the pursuit of Glam Moon, a place of eternal beauty and healing, and believes the pathway there can only be found at the end of pleasure.
On the heels of tragedy, Martin Lovegrove moves his family to Halcyon. A couple of months, he tells himself, to retreat from the chaos and grind. Yet he soon begins to suspect there is something beneath Halcyon s perfect veneer. As the founder captivates his young family, Martin sets out to discover the truth of the island, however terrible it might be, where something so perfect hides unimaginable darkness beneath…
Someone Like Me by M. R. Carey.
Published by Orbit on November 8th, 2018.
I’ve read some great reviews for this book and it seems to be getting lots of praise. I was a fan of Carey’s previous book, The Boy on the Bridge so I’m interested to read this one.
THERE ARE TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY.
Liz Kendall wouldn’t hurt a fly. Even when times get tough, she’s devoted to bringing up her kids in a loving home.
But there’s another side to Liz, one that’s dark and malicious. She will do anything to get her way – no matter how extreme.
And when her alter-ego takes control, the consequences are devastating.
The Winter Road by Adrian Selby.
Published by Orbit on November 15th, 2018.
Looking forward to this one, hopefully it will be a nice and dark grimdark read.
The greatest empire of them all began with a road.
The Circle – a thousand miles of perilous forests and warring clans. No one has ever tamed such treacherous territory before, but ex-soldier Teyr Amondsen, veteran of a hundred battles, is determined to try.
With a merchant caravan protected by a crew of skilled mercenaries, Amondsen embarks on a dangerous mission to forge a road across the untamed wilderness that was once her home. But a warlord rises in the wilds of the Circle, uniting its clans and terrorising its people. Teyr’s battles may not be over yet . . .
All roads lead back to war.
Athena’s Champion (Olympus Trilogy #1) by David Hair and Cath Mayo.
Published by Canelo on November 8th, 2018.
I’m a fan of Greek mythology and think sounds really good. 🙂
The first in a thrilling new historical fantasy series; Odysseus must embrace his secret heritage and outwit the vengeful gods who would control or destroy him…
Prince Odysseus of Ithaca is about to have his world torn apart. He’s travelled to the oracle at Pytho to be anointed as heir to his island kingdom; but instead the Pythia reveals a terrible secret, one that tears down every pillar of his life, and marks him out for death.
Outcast by his family, hunted by the vengeful gods, Odysseus is offered sanctuary by Athena, goddess of wisdom, and thrust into the secret war between the Olympians for domination and survival. Only his wits, and his skill as a warrior, can keep him ahead of their power games – and alive.
When one of Athena’s schemes goes drastically wrong, and the young Helen of Sparta is kidnapped, Odysseus must journey past the gates of Hades to save her. Falling in love with a Trojan princess, a bewitching woman who poses a deadly threat to both his homeland and Athena, won’t make his task any easier…
The Taking of Annie Thorne by C. J. Tudor.
Published by Michael Joseph on February 21st, 2019.
I was a huge fan of Tudor’s debut book The Chalk Man (my review) when it was released early this year, absolutely loved it! So, to say that I managed to wangle myself a proof copy of her next book is amazing for a lowly little blogger like me. Cannot wait to read this one.
One night, Annie went missing. Disappeared from her own bed. There were searches, appeals. Everyone thought the worst. And then, miraculously, after forty-eight hours, she came back. But she couldn’t, or wouldn’t, say what had happened to her.
Something happened to my sister. I can’t explain what. I just know that when she came back, she wasn’t the same. She wasn’t my Annie.
I didn’t want to admit, even to myself, that sometimes I was scared to death of my own little sister.
The Lingering by SJI Holliday.
Published by Orenda Books out now in ebook and released in paperback on November 15th, 2018.
I have already read and reviewed this book. I loved it, it is a delectably dark and chilling read (my review).
Married couple Jack and Ali Gardiner move to a self-sufficient commune in the English Fens, desperate for fresh start. The local village is known for the witches who once resided there and Rosalind House, where the commune has been established, is a former psychiatric home, with a disturbing history.
When Jack and Ali arrive, a chain of unexpected and unexplained events is set off, and it becomes clear that they are not all that they seem. As the residents become twitchy, and the villagers suspicious, events from the past come back to haunt them, and someone is seeking retribution…
Purchased PS4 Game: Red Dead Redemeption 2.
Released 26th October, 2018.
I’m a huge fan of the first Red Dead Redemption game (can’t believe it was released 8 years ago, how time flies). And, well, this right here is the reason that I won’t be doing much blogging or reading for the next month as I’m going to play this rather than do those things. lol 🙂 Yes, I’m a bad blogger and a bad reader too. Alas, blogging (and reading) is a hobby, like gaming. I’m not a professional nor do I get paid. Ergo, my other hobby is going to get the majority of my time until I have completed the game so posts from me will be few and far between (apart from already scheduled ones). I would say don’t miss me but no-one would care if my blog vanished and I didn’t post anyway. 🙂
America, 1899. The end of the wild west era has begun as lawmen hunt down the last remaining outlaw gangs. Those who will not surrender or succumb are killed.
After a robbery goes badly wrong in the western town of Blackwater, Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang are forced to flee. With federal agents and the best bounty hunters in the nation massing on their heels, the gang must rob, steal and fight their way across the rugged heartland of America in order to survive. As deepening internal divisions threaten to tear the gang apart, Arthur must make a choice between his own ideals and loyalty to the gang who raised him.
From the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption 2 is an epic tale of life in America at the dawn of the modern age.

I’ve had my eye on The Winter Road for some time now, and hope to be able to fit it into my reading queue soon: every time I see a fellow blogger list it I remind myself I MUST make some room for it 🙂
And I absolutely recommend Someone Like Me: it’s totally different from Carey’s previous work, but it’s an amazing, breath-taking read.
