These are the latest books that I have received.
As always, my thanks to the publishers and publicists for the books. I am always grateful for each and every book I receive and always slightly baffled too that people choose to send me books!
Books received for review consideration:
The Split by Sharon Bolton.

I think that this sounds like it could be really cool. I’m hoping that it’ll be nice and dark.

The Shadow Saint (The Black Iron Legacy #2) by Gareth Hanrahan.

I really enjoyed the first book, The Gutter Prayer and have high hopes for this, the sequel.
Enter a city of spires and shadows . . .

The Wise Friend by Ramsey Campbell.
Published by Flame Tree Press on April 23rd, 2020.
Surprise book post and while horror isn’t one of my ‘go-to’ genres this sounds like it could be pretty cool.
Patrick Torrington’s aunt Thelma was a successful artist whose late work turned towards the occult. While staying with her in his teens he found evidence that she used to visit magical sites. As an adult he discovers her journal of her explorations, and his teenage son Roy becomes fascinated too. His experiences at the sites scare Patrick away from them, but Roy carries on the search, together with his new girlfriend. Can Patrick convince his son that his increasingly terrible suspicions are real, or will what they’ve helped to rouse take a new hold on the world?
The Manifestations of Sherlock Holmes by James Lovegrove.
Published by Titan on January 21st, 2020.
I’m a big fan of Lovegrove’s The Cthulu casebooks trilogy that combines Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes with H. P. Lovecraft’s Cthulu mythos. Lovegrove also writes normal Sherlock Holmes books, apart from his recent book Sherlock Holmes and the Christmas Demon I haven’t read any but this, the new short story collection by him seems like an ideal opportunity to rectify that.
Tales of treachery, intrigue and evil…
MAVERICK DETECTIVE SHERLOCK HOLMES AND HIS FAITHFUL CHRONICLER DR JOHN WATSON RETURN IN TWELVE THRILLING SHORT STORIES
The iconic duo find themselves swiftly drawn into a series of puzzling and sinister events: an otherworldly stone whose touch inflicts fatal bleeding; a hellish potion unlocks a person s devilish psyche; Holmes’s most hated rival detective tells his story; a fiendishly clever, almost undetectable method of revenge; Watson finally has his chance to shine; and many more – including a brand-new Cthulhu Casebooks story.
The Memory Wood by Sam Lloyd.
Published by Bantam Press on February 2nd, 2020.
I like dark thrillers, this sounds like it will hit the sweet spot.
Elijah has lived in the Memory Wood for as long as he can remember. It’s the only home he’s ever known.
Elissa has only just arrived. And she’ll do everything she can to escape.
When Elijah stumbles across thirteen-year-old Elissa, in the woods where her abductor is hiding her, he refuses to alert the police. Because in his twelve years, Elijah has never had a proper friend. And he doesn’t want Elissa to leave.
Not only that, Elijah knows how this can end. After all, Elissa isn’t the first girl he’s found inside the Memory Wood.
As her abductor’s behaviour grows more erratic, Elissa realises that outwitting strange, lonely Elijah is her only hope of survival. Their cat-and-mouse game of deception and betrayal will determine both their fates, and whether either of them will ever leave the Memory Wood . . .
Beast (Six Stories #4) by Matt Wesolowski.
Published by Orenda Books on February 6th in paperback and out now in ebook.
I love this series, I loved this book, I had to read and review it straight away, that is all! My review can be found – !!HERE!!
Elusive online journalist Scott King examines the chilling case of a young vlogger found frozen to death in the legendary local ‘vampire tower’, in another explosive episode of Six Stories…
In the wake of the ‘Beast from the East’ cold snap that ravaged the UK in 2018, a grisly discovery was made in a ruin on the Northumbrian coast. Twenty-four-year-old Vlogger, Elizabeth Barton, had been barricaded inside what locals refer to as ‘The Vampire Tower’, where she was later found frozen to death.
Three young men, part of an alleged ‘cult’, were convicted of this terrible crime, which they described as a ‘prank gone wrong’
However, in the small town of Ergarth, questions have been raised about the nature of Elizabeth Barton’s death and whether the three convicted youths were even responsible.Elusive online journalist Scott King speaks to six witnesses – people who knew both the victim and the three killers – to peer beneath the surface of the case. He uncovers whispers of a shocking online craze that held the young of Ergarth in its thrall and drove them to escalate a series of pranks in the name of internet fame. He hears of an abattoir on the edge of town, which held more than simple slaughter behind its walls, the tragic and chilling legend of the ‘Ergarth Vampire…
Both a compulsive, taut and terrifying thriller, and a bleak and distressing look at modern society’s desperation for attention, Beast will unveil a darkness from which you may never return…
I Am Dust by Louise Beech.
Published by Orenda Books on February 16th, 2020 in ebook and April 16th, 2020 in paperback.
Sounds awesome, I loved Beech’s previous book Call Me Star Girl and expect this to be brilliant!
The Dean Wilson Theatre is believed to be haunted by a long-dead actress, singing her last song, waiting for her final cue, looking for her killer…
Now Dust, the iconic musical, is returning after twenty years. But who will be brave enough to take on the role of ghostly goddess Esme Black, last played by Morgan Miller, who was murdered in her dressing room?
Theatre usher Chloe Dee is caught up in the spectacle. As the new actors arrive, including an unexpected face from her past, everything changes. Are the eerie sounds and sightings backstage real or just her imagination? Is someone playing games?
Is the role of Esme Black cursed? Could witchcraft be at the heart of the tragedy? And are dark deeds from Chloe’s past about to catch up with her?
Not all the drama takes place onstage. Sometimes murder, magic, obsession and the biggest of betrayals are real life. When you’re in the theatre shadows, you see everything. And Chloe has been watching…
A Dark Matter by Doug Johnstone.
Published by Orenda Books on January 23rd, 2020.
Sounds like it should be a good read.
Three generations of women from the Skelfs family take over the family funeral-home and PI businesses in the first book of a taut, page-turning and darkly funny new series. Meet the Skelfs: well-known Edinburgh family, proprietors of a long-established funeral-home business, and private investigators… When patriarch Jim dies, it’s left to his wife Dorothy, daughter Jenny and granddaughter Hannah to take charge of both businesses, kicking off an unexpected series of events. Dorothy discovers mysterious payments to another woman, suggesting that Jim wasn’t the husband she thought he was. Hannah’s best friend Mel has vanished from university, and the simple adultery case that Jenny takes on leads to something stranger and far darker than any of them could have imagined. As the women struggle to come to terms with their grief, and the demands of the business threaten to overwhelm them, secrets from the past emerge, which change everything… A compelling, tense and shocking thriller and a darkly funny and warm portrait of a family in turmoil, A Dark Matter introduces a cast of unforgettable characters, marking the start of an addictive new series.
The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix.
Published by Quirk Books on April 7th, 2020.
I have only read one other book by Hendrix, We Sold Our Souls and I loved it. The premise for this sounds interesting and like it could be a lot of fun.
Patricia Campbell’s life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a good-bye kiss in the morning, her kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she’s always a step behind on thank-you notes and her endless list of chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings they’re as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are marriage, motherhood, and neighborhood gossip. This predictable pattern is upended when Patricia meets James Harris, a handsome stranger who moves into the neighborhood to take care of his elderly aunt and ends up joining the book club. James is sensitive and well-read, and he makes Patricia feel things she hasn’t felt in twenty years. But there’s something off about him. He doesn’t have a bank account, he doesn’t like going out during the day, and Patricia’s mother-in-law insists that she knew him when she was a girl an impossibility. When local children go missing, Patricia and the book club members start to suspect James is more of a Bundy than a Beatnik but no one outside of the book club believes them. Have they read too many true crime books, or have they invited a real monster into their homes?
Highfire by Eoin Colfer.
Published by Jo Fletcher Books on January 28th, 2020.
Colfer is famous for the Artemis Fowl series of books, which I have never read. This is his adult fantasy debut and sounds like it could be really fun.
Squib Moreau may be swamp-wild, but his intentions are (generally) good: he really wants to be a supportive son to his hard-working momma Elodie. But sometimes life gets in the way – like when Fake Daddy walked out on them leaving a ton of debt, or when crooked Constable Regence Hooke got to thinking pretty Elodie Moreau was just the gal for him . . .
An apprenticeship with the local moonshine runner, servicing the bayou, looks like the only way to pay off the family debts and maybe get Squib and his momma a place in town, far from Constable Hooke’s unwanted courtship and Fake Daddy’s reputation.
Unfortunately for Squib, Hooke has his own eye on that very same stretch of bayou – and neither of them have taken into account the fire-breathing dragon hiding out in the Louisiana swamp . . .

What a great haul! The Wise Friend sounds terrifying, but then again it IS Ramsey Campbell!

I’ve never read anything by him before. Horror isn’t really my genre and I didn’t know who he was.😂

Yeah, it is a great haul, I’m really lucky. Ah, that sucks to hear. We both enjoyed and reviewed his previous book I’d have thought you’d have gotten the email from them for it too.😥

Nope 😭 I have been sent others but no Sherlock. It hurts my soul.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I think that I was sent the email what feels like months ago as I was getting slightly concerned that the book had gone missing as the release date was getting nearer and nearer.😂 I’ve had a few others from Titan but after the Holmes email it was very barren and it is only in the last couple of weeks that I’ve received emails again – none of the books appealed though.😂

I’ve had my beady eye on that Ramsey Campbell one! Looks good, I’m struggling to find decent horror these days!

Damn, this is an old book haul post.😂😂😂 The Campbell book is decent, takes a while to get going and is written in quite a dry way, but I enjoyed it.
