These are the latest books that I have received.
As always, my thanks to the publishers and publicists for the books. I am always grateful for each and every book I receive and always slightly baffled too that people choose to send me books!
Books received for review consideration:
Shorefall (The Founders #2) by Robert Jackson Bennett.
Published by Quercus on April 21st, 2020.
I enjoyed Foundryside and I have read mostly good things about this, the second book in The Founders trilogy.
The upstart firm Foundryside is struggling to make it. Orso Igancio and his star employee, former thief Sancia Grado, are accomplishing brilliant things with scriving, the magical art of encoding sentience into everyday objects, but it’s not enough. The massive merchant houses of Tevanne won’t tolerate competition, and they’re willing to do anything to crush Foundryside.
But even the merchant houses of Tevanne might have met their match. An immensely powerful and deadly entity has been resurrected in the shadows of Tevanne, one that’s not interested in wealth or trade routes: a hierophant, one of the ancient practitioners of scriving. And he has a great fascination for Foundryside, and its employees – especially Sancia.
Now Sancia and the rest of Foundryside must race to combat this new menace, which means understanding the origins of scriving itself – before the hierophant burns Tevanne to the ground.
The Wailing Woman by Maria Lewis.
Published by Piatkus on April 30th, 2020.
Not too sure that this is for me to be honest as I struggle with urban fantasy and only very rarely read the genre.
Good girls don’t talk back. Good girls don’t cry. Good girls don’t scream.
Sadie Burke has been forced to be a good girl her entire life. As a banshee, she’s the bottom of the ladder when it comes to the supernatural hierarchy. Weak. Condemned. Powerless. Silent. That’s what she and her six sisters have been told their entire lives, since their species was first banished from Ireland.
Yet when a figure from her childhood unexpectedly arrives on the scene, Sadie finds it harder than ever to toe the line.
Texas Contos is the son of their greatest oppressor. He’s also someone she’s inexplicably drawn to, and as they grow closer, Sadie begins to question what banshees have been told for centuries about their gifts.
But the truth comes at a cost. With Sadie and Tex forced to run for their lives, their journey leads them to new friends, old enemies, and finally to her true voice – one that could shatter the supernatural world forever.
Making Wolf by Tade Thompson.
Published by Constable on May 7th, 2020 and originally published by Rosarium on September 21st, 2015.
I hadn’t heard anything about this book but, when it arrived it sounded like something that I’d enjoy and I did. My review should be posted tomorrow to coincide with the publication day.
Meet Weston Kogi, a London supermarket store detective. He returns home to his West African home country for his aunt’s funeral. He sees his family, his ex-girlfriend Nana, his old school mate Church. Food is good, beer is plentiful, and telling people he works as a homicide detective seems like harmless hyperbole, until he wakes up in hell.
He is kidnapped and forced by two separate rebel factions to investigate the murder of a local hero, Papa Busi. The solution may tip a country on the brink into civil war.
The Bone Shard Daughter (The Drowning Empire #1) by Andrea Stewart.
Published by Orbit on September 10th, 2020.
Forbidden dark magic and magical animal-like constructs this sounds awesome!
The emperor’s reign has lasted for decades, his mastery of bone shard magic powering the animal-like constructs that maintain law and order. But now his rule is failing, and revolution is sweeping across the Empire’s many islands.
Lin is the emperor’s daughter and spends her days trapped in a palace of locked doors and dark secrets. When her father refuses to recognise her as heir to the throne, she vows to prove her worth by mastering the forbidden art of bone shard magic.
Yet such power carries a great cost, and when the revolution reaches the gates of the palace, Lin must decide how far she is willing to go to claim her birthright – and save her people.

If It Bleeds by Stephen King.
Published by Hodder & Stoughton on April 21st, 2020.
A cheeky little treat to myself well, I have no-one else to treat or to treat me. However, if you are offering then be aware that I am an acquired taste and satisfaction is not guaranteed. 🙂
News people have a saying: ‘If it bleeds, it leads’. And a bomb at Albert Macready Middle School is guaranteed to lead any bulletin.
Holly Gibney of the Finders Keepers detective agency is working on the case of a missing dog – and on her own need to be more assertive – when she sees the footage on TV. But when she tunes in again, to the late-night report, she realises there is something not quite right about the correspondent who was first on the scene. So begins ‘If It Bleeds’, a stand-alone sequel to the No. 1 bestselling THE OUTSIDER featuring the incomparable Holly on her first solo case – and also the riveting title story in Stephen King’s brilliant new collection.
Dancing alongside are three more wonderful long stories from this ‘formidably versatile author’ (The Sunday Times) – ‘Mr Harrigan’s Phone’, ‘The Life of Chuck’ and ‘Rat’. All four display the richness of King’s storytelling with grace, humour, horror and breathtaking suspense. A fascinating Author’s Note gives us a wonderful insight into the origin of each story and the writer’s unparalleled imagination.

I really want If It Bleeds … but I haven’t read The Outsider yet. So I should probably avoid 😂
Nice haul 👌

Probably but I’ve read reviews that say you need to have read The Outsider first, others that say you don’t and then others that say you need to have read The Outsider and The Mr Mercades trilogy.😂
Hoping it’ll be good and that at least one of the four will have a decent ending. Hopefully no teenage aliens either.😂

I think I’ll go for Outsider first haha.
I’m getting near the end of Insomnia … it doesn’t feel possible for aliens to appear but I’m not holding my breath 😂

The Outsider was really good.👍📚 Don’t tempt fate Aaron it only takes a couple of sentences for the aliens to appear.😂

It does sound good but urban fantasy is something that I really struggle with. Who knows, if I try it I might enjoy it.👍📚

A great haul, indeed!
I’m looking with *keen* interest at the King book, just as I’m looking forward to Shorefall, having recently read and enjoyed Foundryside.
Happy reading!!! 🙂

The Bone Shard Daughter sounds epic. I’m all about books that have interesting magic systems and bone shard magic is not something I’m all too familiar with haha.

It does and me neither but I’m interested to find out more about it.👍📚

Awesome haul! I want If it Bleeds, but I like the cat cover better, but that one’s almost double the price. 😂 Also I haven’t read the Outsider yet. 😩

The cat cover is awesome. It is the US cover isn’t it? The Outsider is fantastic, I really enjoyed it.
