THE TWISTER REVIEWS THF.

Today’s post is written by the Twister. This is how he meets Halakh, an old Jaelite mystic, in the novel’s prologue:

Halakh spun around again. A shape slid out of the darkness. Halakh squinted his eyes to make out who it was and saw a short young man dressed in a black cloak. The face that peeped out from under the hood was handsome and the skin and eyes were clear.

Halakh felt a spasm of shock and looked again at the golden bee. ‘But you’re supposed to be dead – and you can’t be one of Them, can you?’

The stranger unclasped his black cloak and let it drop to the floor; underneath, he was wearing a white tunic covered in golden bees. Halakh saw the mound of a hunchback between the man’s shoulders.

I am certainly not dead, but someone else is now. The author blames me on the first page for a murder, but it was the golden lion who did the killing, not me. The lion hid among the mosaics on the temple ceiling, but I knew it was there – I saw its tail twitching.

It was I who warned you.

That is my hump talking. Yes, hump, you warned me of danger – you often do. But it was I who escaped from the lion. It was I who realised that it was really the shapeshifting creature that had ruined my life. It was I who tracked the creature and found its true form.

Without me, you would be dead.

Without you, I would be perfect! But my hump’s moodiness distracts me from another important thing. This author writes about a woman called Sunniva, but she is really a water spirit. I followed her to the river to see her change back into her true form.

You wanted to watch her swim naked.

You are jealous, hump! What could be more ridiculous than a jealous hump? You worry that when I think about the water spirit I forget about you, but how could I? We are inseparable, you and I, and always will be. But the water spirit loves me. She is mine.

That is what you want to believe.

Now he is burning with anger – ha ha! Go on, hump, set yourself on fire! He will soon cool down and stop sulking, and then we will journey on like we always have. Together.

The Hidden Face.

A face without a face – an unmasking that leaves the mask.

Once every few hundred years, the sun god, the Akhen takes on human form and descends to earth. Each Unmasking of the Face of the Akhen ends one era and begins another; the last one created the Faustian Empire. Where and when will the Face next appear, and who will he – or she – be?

Dayraven, son of a great hero, returns to Faustia after years as a hostage of their rivals, the Magians. Those years have changed him, but Faustia has changed as well; the emperor Calvo now seems eccentric and is controlled by one of Dayraven’s old enemies. Following the brutal death of his old teacher, Dayraven is drawn, together with a warrior woman named Sunniva, into the search for an ancient secret that would change the fate of empires.

Powerful enemies want the secret as well, including a dynasty of magician-kings who were thought to have died out long before, a mad, murderous hunchback and a beautiful, deadly woman who is never seen. Sunniva and Dayraven fight to survive and to solve the mystery while their own pasts come back to life and the attraction between them deepens.

The Hidden Face is a fantasy mystery drenched in the atmosphere of the Early Middle Ages and in Kabbalistic riddles, and is the first book in the Fifth Unmasking series.
