Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.

Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him….

God of War – The Official Novelization by J. M. Barlog.

Published by Titan Books on August 28th, 2018.

I’m a massive fan of the God of War gaming series and the latest game, which this book is the adaptation of is epic. I have to admit to a trepidation over the book so we shall see how it goes.

His vengeance against the Gods of Olympus years behind him, Kratos now lives as a man in the realm of Norse gods and monsters. It is in this harsh, unforgiving world that he must fight to survive… and teach his son to do the same. This startling reimagining of God of War deconstructs the core elements that defined the series satisfying combat; breathtaking scale; and a powerful narrative and fuses them anew.

Lies Between Us by Ronnie Turner.

Published by HQ Digital on October 1st, 2018.

I’m on the blog tour for this book at the arse end of October and couldn’t wait to read it so I’ve already read and reviewed the book on Netgalley and Goodreads (with Ronnie’s permission, of course). It’s fantastic, definitely one to watch out for. 🙂

A House of Ghosts by W. C. Ryan.

Published by Bonnier Zaffre on October 4th, 2018.

This is a stunning looking book, one that makes you look at the book and think ‘wow’. The blurb is also very enticing. However, I’m not going to lie, I didn’t even know that I was on this publisher mailing list!

I Will Always Find You by John Ajvide Lindqvist.

Published by Riverrun on 20th September, 2018.

I’ve never read anything by the author before but the book sounds interesting.

In September 1985, nineteen-year-old John Lindqvist moves into a dilapidated old building in Stockholm, planning to make his living as a magician. Something strange is going on in the building’s basement – and the price of entry is just a little blood.

I Always Find You is a horror story – as bizarre and macabre as any of Lindqvist’s bestselling novels. It’s also a book about being young and lonely, about making friends and growing up. It’s about magic, and the intensity of human connection – and a society’s communal responsibility for a devastating act of political violence.

Priest of Bones (War for the Rose Throne #1) by Peter McLean.

Published by Jo Fletcher on October 4th, 2018.

I’ve seen mostly positive reviews for this book and it has been a while since I read anything that is classed as grimdark so I’m hoping that I’ll enjoy it.

‘Sixty-five thousand battle-shocked, trained killers came home to no jobs, no food and the plague. What did Her Majesty think was going to happen?’

Tomas Piety takes his duties seriously: as a soldier, as a priest of Our Lady of Eternal Sorrows and as a leader of men. He has come home from the war to reclaim his family business, to provide for his men and to ensure the horrors of Abingon can never happen in Ellinburg.

But things have changed: his crime empire has been stolen and the people of Ellinburg – his people – have run out of food and hope and places to hide. With his best friend Bloody Anne, his war-damaged brother Jochan and his new gang, the Pious Men, Tomas sets out to reclaim what was his.

And as Tomas is dragged into a web of political intrigue by the sinister Queen’s Men, forced to work against the foreign infiltrators lurking in the backstreet taverns, brothels and gambling dens of the Stink, one thing becomes clear.

The war has just begun.

Kindle freebie:

For Reasons Unknown (DCI Matilda Darke #1) by Michael Wood.

Published by Killer Reads on October 1st, 2015.

It was on offer at zero pounds, zero pennies so I thought why not as the blurb sounds intriguing and it has many favourable reviews.

Two murders. Twenty years. Now the killer is back for more…

DCI Matilda Darke has returned to work after a nine month absence. A shadow of her former self, she is tasked with re-opening a cold case: the terrifyingly brutal murders of Miranda and Stefan Harkness. The only witness was their eleven-year-old son, Jonathan, who was too deeply traumatized to speak a word.

Then a dead body is discovered, and the investigation leads back to Matilda’s case. Suddenly the past and present converge, and it seems a killer may have come back for more…

Purchased:

What Does This Button Do? by Bruce Dickinson.

Published by Harper Collins on October 19th, 2017.

I’ve wanted this book for ages, well, since it’s release and when I saw a first print hardback copy in The Works with the black page edges I couldn’t resist. 🙂

buton

Bruce Dickinson – Iron Maiden’s legendary front man – is one of the world’s most iconic singers and songwriters. But there are many strings to Bruce’s bow, of which larger-than-life lead vocalist is just one. He is also an airline captain, aviation entrepreneur, motivational speaker, beer brewer, novelist, radio presenter, film scriptwriter and an international fencer: truly one of the most unique and interesting men in the world.

In What Does this Button Do? Bruce contemplates the rollercoaster of life. He recounts – in his uniquely anarchic voice – the explosive exploits of his eccentric British childhood, the meteoric rise of Maiden, summoning the powers of darkness, the philosophy of fencing, brutishly beautiful Boeings and firmly dismissing cancer like an uninvited guest.

Bold, honest, intelligent and funny, this long-awaited memoir captures the life, heart and mind of a true rock icon, and is guaranteed to inspire curious souls and hard-core fans alike.

Snap by Belinda Bauer.

Published by Black Swan on August 23rd, 2018.

I had seen many positive reviews for the book when it was released in hardback earlier on the year and so, i thought ‘why not’ when I saw the paperback release had just been released.

On a stifling summer’s day, eleven-year-old Jack and his two sisters sit in their broken-down car, waiting for their mother to come back and rescue them. Jack’s in charge, she’d said. I won’t be long.

But she doesn’t come back. She never comes back. And life as the children know it is changed for ever.

Three years later, Jack is still in charge – of his sisters, of supporting them all, of making sure nobody knows they’re alone in the house, and – quite suddenly – of finding out the truth about what happened to his mother. . .

  1. Nice haul Drew!

I’ve seen a million great reviews for The Silent Patient! I’ve been looking for something psychological to read with my book club, so I’ll try to throw it into the mix.

LOVE the cover of House of Ghosts! It sounds like a really good murder mystery. Perfect book to read in October.

Strange Ink sounds like an interesting concept. I’m sure it’s too scary for my wuss self, but I’m interested to hear if you think it’s any good.
