Guest Post: Therapy Quest.

Stories have always been a significant part of my childhood, allowing me to feel less alone even during my many hospitalizations due to Chernobyl radiation poisoning. The radiation exposure forever changed my physiology, causing me to have severe migraines and even seizures. Spending more time feeling sick than well made me feel “weak” and “broken” and in order to escape my painful reality, I became an avid reader. I remember wishing that I could be a part of some of the fantasy novels I was reading, wishing that I were “magical” or “special enough” to be a part of something meaningful.

Years later, when I became a psychologist, I started to incorporate stories into therapy to help my clients become their own versions of their favorite hero. Hence, when my editor asked if I would be interested in writing an interactive fantasy quest book, I was more than excited. This meant that the reader would become the main character of their own heroic quest. The book, Therapy Quest, is written in such a way that the reader learns that they are the Chosen One and that the very things that they might struggle with, such as anxiety, depression, or insecurities are what make them most qualified for this position. The reader then has to make series of choices along their quest. They meet new friends and encounter dangerous enemies. Every choice the reader makes will change their quest and will allow them to either gain or lose points in different categories. In addition, each choice will allow the reader to learn a mental health skill, such a Mindfulness Potion. All of these spells and potions will be necessary for the reader to prepare for the final battle

The main benefit of the book is that it is meant to be an active and engaging tool for learning mental health skills while reducing mental health stigma. The reader will learn not only how to help themselves, but also how to help others who might be struggling. My hope is that this format will make learning mental health skills both accessible and fun.

I hope you have a magical journey.

Did you ever want to be a hero? Have you ever dreamed of going on an epic quest to destroy monsters, defeat evil forces and fly on the back of a dragon?

This interactive new self-help book puts you, the reader, in a fantasy world where every decision you make and every path you take will influence the outcome of your journey.

When the seer Anka spirits you away to the world of Here, you find yourself proclaimed the Chosen One – the hero everyone is relying on to defeat the evil sorceress Mallena before she destroys everything. But you don’t feel like a hero, do you?

If you choose to accept this quest, you will have an opportunity to learn the skills that you need and put together a crew of loyal friends and companions to help you with your journey. The skills are based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), which has been shown through research to help people overcome depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic pain, addiction disorders and many other common problems.

Your journey will be full of danger, loss and strange creatures, but it will also be full of excitement, adventure and fun, and will let you form life-long bonds of friendship, which no curses can break. This book is your call to adventure, an invitation to be the hero in your own story.
