book haul

These are the latest books that I have received.

As always, my thanks to the publishers and publicists for the books. I am always grateful for each and every book I receive and always slightly baffled too that people choose to send me books!

Books received for review consideration:

Crowfall (The Raven’s Mark #3) by Ed McDonald.

Published by Gollancz on June 27th, 2019.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I’m here and I’m all in for Crowfall the third and final book in The Raven’s Mark trilogy and one of my most anticipated books of the year. High hopes for this one dear reader, sky-high hopes.😀

crowfalled

A sorceress cataclysm has hit the Range, the final defensive line between the Republic and the immortal Deep Kings.

Tormenting red rains sweep the land, new monstrosities feed on fear in the darkness, and the power of the Nameless, the gods who protect the Republic, lies broken. The Blackwing captains who serve them are being picked off one by one, and even immortals have learned what it means to die. Meanwhile the Deep Kings have only grown stronger, and are poised to deliver a blow that will finally end the war.

Ryhalt Galharrow stands apart from it all.

He has been deeper into the wasteland known as the Misery than ever before. It has grown within him – changed him – but all power comes with a price, and now the ghosts of his past, formerly confined to the Misery, walk with him everywhere.

They will even follow him, and the few surviving Blackwing captains, on one final mission into the darkness.

Knight of Stars (The God Fragments #3) By Tom Lloyd.

Published by Gollancz on June 27th, 2019.

I really enjoyed the first book in The God Fragments series, Stranger of Tempest, it’s just good honest fun fantasy. I made grabby hands at the press release for this book and then realised that I’ve yet to read Princess of Blood, the second book, D’oh!😂 The good news is that I have it, I remember the good folks at Gollancz sending me it and then I never got around to reading it…just need to find it now and read it before this one.😂

Lynx and the rest of the Cards are heading south. There’s money in their pockets, beer in their hands and a simple job ahead – sun, sea and not getting shot at much. Throw in the prospect of a bar fight and it’s almost a holiday.

But the volatile Mage Islands are a powder-keg, one just waiting for a spark. A bloody-handed exile perhaps, or the agent of a foreign power preparing for war. Maybe even a bunch of trigger-happy drunks who’ve upset the balance of magic across the Riven Kingdom.

Or all three together, that’d definitely work…

Priest of Lies (War for the Rose Throne #2) by Peter McLean.

Published by Jo Fletcher on July 2nd, 2019.

I loved Priest of Bones when I read it last year, it was a fantastic blend of fantasy and gangsters. Or, if you will, gangtasy and I have high hopes for this, the sequel.

‘The poorer and more oppressed people are, the weaker they become – until they just refuse to take it any more. Then they will rise up, and the gods help their oppressors.’

When Tomas Piety and his Pious Men returned from the war, he just wanted to rebuild his crime empire and look after his people. But the sinister Queen’s Men had different ideas and whether he likes it or not, he’s now a spy as well.

Now, half the city of Ellinburg lies in ashes and the webs of political intrigue are stretching out from the Queen’s capital to pull Tomas in. Dannsburg is calling.

In Dannsburg the nobility fight with words, not blades, but the results are every bit as bloody. In this pit of beasts, Tomas must decide once and for all whether he is truly the people’s champion . . . or just a priest of lies.

And as Tomas’ power grows, the nobility had better watch their backs . .

Jade War by Fonda Lee.

Published by Orbit Books on July 25th, 2019.

Jade War is the sequel to Jade City which I am yet to read. I’ve heard many great things about it and I really need to get around to catching up with this series.

jadewar

On the island of Kekon, the Kaul family is locked in a violent feud for control of the capital city and the supply of magical jade that endows trained Green Bone warriors with supernatural powers they alone have possessed for hundreds of years.

Beyond Kekon’s borders, war is brewing. Powerful foreign governments and mercenary criminal kingpins alike turn their eyes on the island nation. Jade, Kekon’s most prized resource, could make them rich – or give them the edge they’d need to topple their rivals.

Faced with threats on all sides, the Kaul family is forced to form new and dangerous alliances, confront enemies in the darkest streets and the tallest office towers, and put honor aside in order to do whatever it takes to ensure their own survival – and that of all the Green Bones of Kekon.

The Wolf’s Call (Raven’s Blade #1) by Anthony Ryan.

Published by Orbit Books and released on July 25th, 2019.

Awesome surprise book post, Orbit are far too good to a lowly little blogger like me!

A-Wolfs-Call-_Final-002-645x1024

Vaelin Al Sorna is a living legend. It was his leadership that overthrew empires and his sacrifice that saved the Unified Realm from destruction. Now he lives a quiet life, his days of warfare behind him.

Yet whispers have spread across the sea of an army called the Steel Horde, led by a man who thinks himself a god. When Vaelin learns that Sherin, the woman he lost long ago, has fallen into the Horde’s grasp, he resolves to confront this powerful new threat.

To this end, he travels to the realms of the Merchant Kings – a strange land ruled by honour and intrigue. And as the drums of war echo across kingdoms riven by conflict, Vaelin learns that there are some battles even he cannot hope to win.

The Last Astronaut by David Wellington.

Published by Orbit Books on July 25th, 2019.

I have to be in the right mood to read SFF, usually, I’m not but this sounds like it could be fantastic. I also get an Event Horizon feel from the blurb so I’m hoping that the book strays into horror territory.

dwell

A huge alien object has entered the solar system and is now poised above the Earth. It has made no attempt to communicate.

Out of time and options, NASA turns to its last living astronaut – Commander Sally Jansen, who must lead a team of raw recruits on a mission to make First Contact.

But as the object reveals its secrets, Jansen and her crew find themselves in a desperate struggle for survival.

Invisible Blood edited by Maxim Jakubowski.

Published by Titan Books on July 23rd, 2019.

I don’t read many short story collections, I’ve never read a thriller short story collection, this one sounded interesting so I said yes, please to the press release and decided to give it a go.

thrilss

Open the files on an anthology of seventeen new crime stories to probe the brutal and complex hearts of criminals, and unravel the strangest of mysteries. Watch as a secretive group of intelligence community officers trace Jack Reacher through Heathrow in Lee Child’s “Smile”. In Mary Hoffman’s “Fallen Woman”, a journalist on the trail of a secretive drug lord gets caught up in the violent suicide of a young woman in Siena. And in Jeffrey Deaver’s “Connecting the Dots”, detectives follow the trail of clues in the brutal killing of a homeless man, wherever it may lead… Invisible Blood is a gripping collection exploring the compulsions of the criminal mind.

The Lost Outlaw (Jack Lark #8) by Paul Fraser Collard.

Published by Headline on July 25th, 2019.

This was yet more surprise book post and it is the eighth book in the series. I haven’t read any of the previous books but this sounds great. It also sounds like a western and westerns are cool.👌

tlo

In the midst of civil war, America stands divided. Jack Lark has faced both armies first hand, but will no longer fight for a cause that isn’t his.

1863, Louisiana. Jack may have left the battlefield behind, but his gun is never far from reach, especially on the long and lonely road to nowhere. Soon, his skill lands him a job, and a new purpose.

Navy Colt in hand, Jack embarks on the dangerous task of escorting a valuable wagon train of cotton down through Texas to Mexico. Working for another man, let alone a man like the volatile Brannigan, isn’t going to be easy. With the cargo under constant attack, and the Deep South’s most infamous outlaws hot on their trail, Jack knows he is living on borrowed time.

And, as they cross the border, Jack soon discovers that the usual rules of war don’t apply. He will have to fight to survive, and this time the battle might prove one he could lose.

Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey.

Published by Tor on July 8th, 2019.

Again, another surprise book and it sounds interesting.

mfl

When a gruesome murder is discovered at The Osthorne Academy of Young Mages, where her estranged twin sister teaches Theoretical Magic, reluctant detective Ivy Gamble is pulled into the world of untold power and dangerous secrets. She will have to find a murderer and reclaim her sister – without losing herself.

      1. I have yet to finish the Ryan series, but I plan to finish it this year (even if I am seriously thinking about a rereading of the whole trilogy) but I understand what you mean, even if I enjoyed the second one, it was another thing altogether of the first book… But I hope you would enjoy this one you just get!
