Book Blurb:

Deep in the jungle of Peru, where so much remains unknown, a black, skittering mass devours an American tourist whole. Thousands of miles away, an FBI agent investigates a fatal plane crash in Minneapolis and makes a gruesome discovery. Unusual seismic patterns register in a Kanpur, India earthquake lab, confounding the scientists there. During the same week, the Chinese government “accidentally” drops a nuclear bomb in an isolated region of its own country. As these incidents begin to sweep the globe, a mysterious package from South America arrives at a Washington, D.C. laboratory. Something wants out.

The world is on the brink of an apocalyptic disaster. An ancient species, long dormant, is now very much awake.

Book Review:

I received a free copy of this book courtesy of the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Do you often read books that contain elaborate stories full of interconnecting and interweaving threads, sort of like a spider’s web if you will, a veritable tapestry of important goings on and strands to keep up with and follow??

Do you often get bogged down in the layers of characterisation and development as you learn more and more about the characters involved in the book you are reading. Growing to either love them or hate them?? Caring about their fates and wanting those you like to survive and those you don’t to suffer a suitably heinous demise??

Do you tire of becoming invested in the book instead of just reading and occasionally think, I could really go for something that is just simple fun??

incy2

I know I do and so I offer to you….The Hatching by Ezekiel Boone, a book that forgoes the majesty of the multifaceted story and detailed character development. Instead replacing it with millions of spiders in a book that is all about the arachnid rampage and the devastation it causes.

Around the globe a long dormant race of archaic arachnids start appearing, hence the book’s title ‘The Hatching’ as an egg is discovered that is 10,000 years old and miraculously hatches. At the same time the latent spiders start appearing in a variety of countries, first Peru, then China, India, a Scottish island and also across America, with America being the books main focus.

The invasion causes havoc and destruction as the spiders food source of choice just so happens to be humans! Yes, those cute and hairy creepy crawlies that you probably have countless amounts of hidden around the house, enjoy nothing more than devouring humans, the little critters obviously like raw sausage! 🙂

incy1

The story takes place over six days, showing how fast the infestation of death-dealing spiders manifests and the ensuing panic and terror that it causes. With the pandemic spreading the world goes to hell in a handbasket in under a week.

The lack of in-depth characters doesn’t detract from the book at all. After being introduced some quickly end up as just fodder and food for the spiders, but there is slight development for a few as Boone fleshes out the main characters, giving them some needed back story and growth even if it’s only minor. But this is a tale about the spiders and their rampaging destruction, in The Hatching the arachnids are the star of the book.

The pacing is spot on for the story being told by Boone, with the vast majority of the chapters being short, we flit from location to location and character to character in fairly quick succession keeping the pages turning and the story moving forward.

Creepy in places but not outright scary with a few grisly scenes, Boone does a great job of conveying the threat of the spiders.

incy3

The ending felt like the right way to close out the book and this first part of the tale while simultaneously shouting TO BE CONTINUED! And I can’t wait for the sequel in Skitter to see where Boone takes his story.

The Hatching isn’t a literary masterpiece of a meaningful story written with poetic or even flowery prose. What it is, is just a straightforward but well written and enjoyable read, it’s not subtle but it is fun and sometimes, that’s all you need.

While I was reading I kept thinking, what a great film or programme it would make, be it a cheesy low-budget creature feature akin to the cult Piranha and Sharknado type movies or a more serious high-budget TV series. I finished The Hatching in just two days, it’s only a short read but even for me as a slow reader I devoured it, loving every second of my time spent reading it.

It’s a simple premise that Boone executes really well and I found The Hatching to be a frenetic, fast paced and thoroughly entertaining book.

Recommended.

  1. ACK I hate spiders.. and now I have the heebie jeebies all day. 😦 Great review, this reminds me of that movie Arachnophobia, you probably weren’t even born yet. I’m showing my age now. 😦

      1. Ha, I can’t laugh that Michael Keaton film Beatlejuice scared the sh*t out of me back when I was younger and I used to watch everything, 18 rated films, martial arts, horror, gore and no issues but that film freaked me out!😂

  2. Drew… *throws a virtual stick at you* this spider gif literally made me jump… I just hate, hate, HATE spiders! And – NO- goddamnit, it shouldn’t be a movie! 😀 I remember there was an older film..Arachnophobia or something.. I watched it as a kid and I had a habit of sitting on the floor when watching TV.. I swear I’ ve never felt more itchy or paranoid in my life! 😀

The review is great, it truly is, and even tho spiders = YUK, I do like the premise of it. In fact, it sounds such a fantastic idea and a great execution that I’m nearly considering flagging this into my tbr pile… face your fears head on, hey! 😀

That gif tho… I can still see it even tho I can’t see it…

The poems, Drew! Fantastic, love how you broke down the review with them and really gives the whole feel for the book as well, eh? …

*scratches oneself all over* fucking spiders!

    1. Debbie mentioned Arachnophobia the film too, cheesy now but I bet it’s still fun, I’d like to watch it again actually now its been mentioned!😂

The premise is great, it’s just fun and entertaining which is sometimes what you need, something fun to escape from all the sh*t in real-life.

I think the rights have been bought for either film or a TV series already. Definitely give it a go if you want to face your fears.🕷️🕸️🕷️🕸️

Yeah, the poems sort of give the feel for the book especially as one contains a spoiler involving a Spider and an eye!😂🕷️🕸️

That gif is awesome, I don’t usually use gifs but that one just screamed use me with little Incy crawling across the page!😂

  3. I wish I had enjoyed this as much as others did, because it was a very cool concept, but I abandoned it around the 100-page mark.

  4. From reading the comments, it seems that absolutely everyone missed the entire point of this review: “the little critters obviously like raw sausage! 🙂”

    1. High praise, you are the first to like the spider gif!

It is a surprisingly cool cover, I remember seeing the hardback last year and that cover sucked, deep explanation there!😂 But it was an unappealing cover and yet the newly released paperback cover is awesome.

It was nice to just read something fun, fantasy is often serious and there’s so much going on, it’s cool to just turn off and read a fun book.

      1. Think I slightly prefer the cover to Prey … but I woulc have only rated that book a 3. So this one at least sounds better 🙂 yea, love the occassional read you don’t need to invest too much into.

  5. Oh no! I couldn’t possibly read a book all about spiders turning into eating machines – I’m far too fond of them:). While I wouldn’t want one for a pet, I really love seeing them skitter around the house and the garden…

      1. I really like spiders and insects and will happily pick them up:). If it had been a mouse or rat skittering across the page – that would have had me flinching!

    1. Ha, the general opinion seems to be that the spider gifs weren’t a welcome addition!😂 I thought they added that little bit extra!🕷️🕸️🕷️🕸️

Thanks, I tried to make it a fun review as it was a fun book, nothing to serious just ravenous spiders.😂🕷️🕸️

  6. Thanks a lot for that gif effer.. sigh. Tsk tsk. Oh well. Always something with you.

I had originally debated this one and ultimately put it off. Kind of rethinking that decision now. But I have to ask, did anything in the story feel reminiscent of science fiction in the slightest? I get that vibe from the blurb and review, but notice it is not a listed genre. just curious.

I love when you can practically see the film playing out for a title as you read. Always a good sign!

    1. Sci-fi?? No, not at all, it’s set in the present day and there’s no science in it at all, a little research on the spiders but that’s just an expert in a lab. Nothing sciency or clever about the book, just good dumb fun.😀

Ah, not a fan of the gif either?? Oh well!😂🕸️🕷️🕸️🕷️🕸️🕷️

      1. Ha, ain’t nothing heavy about the book, it’s just a fun read and that works well as the book knows what it is and sticks with that without trying to be something it’s not, it knows it’s just dumb fun and doesn’t try to be clever.😀🕷️🕸️🕷️🕸️🦀🕷️🕸️🕷️🕸️🦀🕷️🕸️🕷️🕸️🦀

  7. Ok, I totally can NOT read a book about people-eating spiders! I couldn’t even watch Arachnophobia (that movie freaked me out and I always check my popcorn now before I eat it). I HATE spiders!! Blech! 😝

  8. Fantastic review, Drew! I need this book. In my life. Now. This is exactly the kind of books I really enjoy, and I just don’t read enough of them! It makes no sense whatsoever! Thanks for recommending this book. And thanks for creeping me out with the spideys. I honestly jumped when I saw the first one crawling across my screen…

    1. Thank you, ha, most people were creeped out by the Spider gifs, I really lucked out finding that exact gif, worked so well!😂🕷️🕸️

It’s definitely a fun read, I hope you enjoy it.😀 Definitely agree with you about it being the type of books to enjoy, I do like my huge fantasy tomes but I also really like books like this, something that’s just simple fun.😀

  9. So I have a confession to make… I accidently had requested this book off NetGalley BEFORE I knew it was about spiders…. I HATE spiders. Like, they are one of my biggest fears. Side note- I hate you for those GIFs ((cringe)) I made a vow to read EVERY NetGalley book I requested though so I am going to have to face my fears and read it… not going to lie, it will definitely be one of the last ones I read lol

    1. Oh man, only one person liked the gifs, everyone else hated them!😂🕸️🕷️

I guess I should ask what you thought a book called The Hatching was about? I’ve seen the US cover, no spiders on that unlike this UK one, so blame the cover!😂🕸️🕷️

It’s a great read, just pure fun but as you hate spiders, not sure how you’d fare with it, you might enjoy it.😀

      1. Hey now! Lots of things hatch out of eggs…. birds, alligators, turtles, snakes… heck even a platypus hatches from an egg. BUT you would think the webbing on the cover on the edition I requested would have tipped me off (facepalm) Ugh! I would much rather this book be about a killer platypus lol

  10. I was squirming throughout this review with all the mention of spiders. Eek! I could not read this book but if I was into this kind of book I would definitely read it.
